The auction starts:

1* - 1** - pass - 2***

2NT - pass - 3?

1 = 17+HCP, any distribution

1 = or (+)

2 = P/C

(Partner pass shows 0-6HCP, otherwise he'd bid)

What would you take 3 for?

I'm assuming the rule that system is on as long as no suit (other than clubs by opps) has been indicated and NT has not been doubled.

It is possible that it should depend on the meaning of the failure to bid over 1. In my IRL partnership, responder can still have a semipositive with five hearts, so system is on.

It's the first natural bid by the partnership so yeah transfers.

I once had this auction

1 1 P P

1NT p 2

Partner thought 2 was a transfer and we got into trouble, I feel this should not be a transfer even in the opponents' suit, because the partnership made a natural bid in a suit before bidding notrump. In fact I held xx QJT9x xx xxxx as responder (or something like that.)

In my world the bidding has gone ...

bla bla bla bla

2NT

System on, 3 is a transfer.

I like this logic B)

Seriously, the auction so far is in effect ...

bla 1) I have something. I'll tell you later

bla 2) I have something. I may tell you later.

bla 3) I have nothing. I may tell you how "much" later.

bla 4) I may have something if you have something.

2NT

So ignore bla 1 through 4 and start from scratch :rolleyes:

This auction is different because here both the pass and the 1D call carry some natural meaning (I mean, say something about shape). I'm not sure if 2H should be to play here. Typically a cuebid on your next opportunity after passing reveals a strong hand that was penalty passing. I agree with you that such a hand can typically just bid 3NT so natural 2H may be better, but it is dangerous to try this at the table.

But it should not be a transfer in any case.
