This is funny, I had a similar hand yesterday where I did decide to splinter with the stiff king. However, the auction was different:

2C - (Dbl) - p - (2D)

2S - (p) - 4D -(p)

4H - (Dbl) - p - (p)

Rdbl - (p) - ??

I had something like Jxxx QJ10x K Jxxx. Do you agree with the auction so far? What's your call now? (playing against jdonn and jlall on BBO, highly amusing table)

I also bid 3D on Apollo's hand, the king of diamonds is my biggest card. In the auction above my LHO had bid diamonds so the king was less likely to be useful and I thought the splinter would be most descriptive.

Han - these were the circumstances where this hand came up.

One of the senior kibitzers challenged the notion that others were making that slam should be bid after the splinter. He specified the hand in this thread of an example of where slam would be poor.

I admit when I initially read the senior kibitzers comments the other night, I missed the fact he was referring to bidding the grand slam. Comments were flying fairly quickly at that moment in time. :)

I thought after the splinter, the small slam would always be bid and that the senior kibber was questioning the validity of bidding six which seemed reasonable opposite any hand that has shown some values (via the pass of the double) and the splinter. The grand is a different story.
