Guest Jlall
4H for me. 3N could certainly be the right contract but it would usually need to be played from my side which is unlikely after a 3C bid by me (partner will bid 3N with a stopper). Even if partner had a diamond stop, my spades are a danger. I could get to 3N from my side by bidding it, but that is way too unilateral opposite what may be no diamond stopper, or short spades, etc. 3C has the downside of helping them lead if we do get to 4H, and I don't see much upside for the above reasons. I am usually all for searching for 3N with an 8 card major fit but I don't think this is the hand. Slam is just too far off for me to try for it, though opposite a perfecta it could be there, I'm more worried about going down in 4.
kenrexford
4♥ here as well. If slam is there, I doubt we can find it intelligently. This is a very difficult pattern.
Winstonm
Responding hand, for all its HCP, really isn't that good at all so slam is not even in the picture for me. 4H should not be a terrible spot to play, but 3N could be. I wouldn't want partner to pass 3N with Kx, KQxxxx, xx, Axx. Because 3N, even when it makes, doesn't rate to be much better place than 4H, I rule out investigating with 3C - it risks confusing the auction. 4H looks right. It should be a decent spot and gives opponents the minimum of information.
jdonn
If slam is there, I doubt we can find it intelligently. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I would always bid 4♥. Slam is possible but remote, and I don't complicate life looking for other games with an 8 card major suit fit.
han
Josh, surely there are hands where you look for other games even when you have an 8-card major suit fit. Not here though, I agree with 4H.

Not here though, I agree with 4H. Only if I can offer or immediately make a choice, like after 1NT transfer 3NT. I really don't to a lot of subtle exploration most of the time to try and find the random 3NT.
skjaeran
I admit I didn't have a slam in mind at all myself either, but I did bid 3♣ followed by 4♥ after partners 3NT. After that partner asked for keycards and bid 6♥. His hand: x QJT87x AKx AxxHe received a spade lead. Trumps were 4-1 with singleton 9. After a black suit show up squeeze he made the contract (♣Q was onside). Other table bid 4♥. I believe most of the 14 tables got to game only - I heard about one pair bidding slam in another match. OK -- there is a secret bid in the developmental stages that I am afraid to release into the bridge world at this time.
han
Is it a special convention Ken?
P_Marlowe
Hi, we play hearts, and since I dont believe slam makes opposite a min. opener, I prefer 4H, but could live with 3C followed by 4H.Maybe a direct 4H bid is lazy, 3C will giveyou the chance to find out, if partner has3 spades and wastage in diamonds, but itmay also tell the oppoenents more them they need to know. With kind regardsMarlowe
pclayton
Slam is barely possible I guess. We play 3♥ as forcing (with 2N lebensohlish) so thats a better start. Not armed with that I really don't mind 3♣ / 4♥ or 4♥.
