Even better. Since West chose to double instead of overcalling spades, East was going to play in spades or diamonds. 12 tricks in spades and diamonds is cold if East declares (except if South leads a spade (!) against 6 and gives North a ruff on winning the A).

Nice bid. S has no business bidding 6. E should have doubled 5 and both opps should have doubled 6.

I like the 6 bid.

Either responder is bidding to make or he's sacrificing. If he's bidding to make, surely the KQ of trump and a side ace is worth two tricks. If he's sacrificing, opener has one trick on defense (assuming that X'er has a singleton heart), which is almost unheard of for an opener. May as well continue the pre-empt before they find their suit, because they're making at least 5.

oh no, W wanted to X and bid spades? that's horrible. i'd never bid 5 with your hand but it sure turned out very nicely

For me, this hand is at the very top end of a 1 overcall, so I don't criticize W here very much, but certainly I'd prefer 1 more useful HCP and maybe to be 6-3-3-1 so that I may not have as many quick losers.

However, the jump to 5 sure kept W out of and is a drawback to the "I'm too strong to O/C method" unless holding even a better hand. If PD simply raises 1 level overcalls with 6 pts and 3 card support, it is hard to miss game by overcalling 1.

Another problem concerns what does W do when opener's PD jumps to 4 and that is passed back to him ? He has to guess.

But West pass of 6C with the ace in and another ace and the KJ in is simply awful. It seems so clear that N/S got their signals crossed and got too high and the chances of 6X maikng seem very remote.

Is it really that clear?

How would you bid these hands?

Just because you can invent one layout where they have exact distributions and a perfect fit and they might not even bid that way shows nothing. At this vul when you have a good hand, opponents who jump around like nuts are usually stealing from you. And I don't mean usually like 2/3, I mean usually like 19/20. West should obviously double.

I know some will double instead of overcaling 1 with this west hand, though I haven't got a clue why. To me this hand is "far" from strong enough for that. Overcalling and rebidding (if not too high) is adequate with this hand.

Agree that west should double 6. The example hand where it is making is ridiculous, north would never jump to 5 with that hand. And even if that happened, no remotely sane person would even think about raising with the south hand - not even the one who raised with the actual hand.
