GAtlinburg Regional

I really believe that you must be joking. In case I am wrong, however, I have some suggestions.

1. Get a cabin. Get lots of people together and get a bigger cabin. The drive into town is not all that bad during the normal bridge-game start-time driving time. The view from the cabins is well worth it, not to mention the pleasure of going over the hands in a hot tub, drinking a beer, looking out at mountains. Not bad parking, either.

2. Get there early. I like it best getting the friday before the tourney. You then can check things out, hike, etc.

3. Have a foursome. If you have three, the partnership area is like the NYSE floor. Lots of people, and many talented ones.

4. Skip Ober-Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Cherokee casino.

Four of us from North Dakota attended last year for the first time and we had a ball! and with the many bracketed knockouts we took home a number of masterpoints.

We stayed at an econolodge about two and half blocks north of the convention center. We booked early, but, believe it or not, there were rooms available last minute. i suppose there were cancellations.

So what? Why do you care?

If masterpoints reflect the number of teams who had not yet accomplished your level of achievement and are thus in brackets below you PLUS the success of competition against your peers, then bringing home a lot of masterpoints is like bringing home a lot of scalps from a battle or noting a lot of scratches on your bedpost. You can't really use either to win the next meeting, but it still is nice to add a few more to your list.

I've had a number of people tell me how much fun Gatlinburg is and how I should try to go.

Personally I've not been able to figure out why I should, and wonder if people could help me.

For the most part, I'm interested in playing against good competition. I particularly enjoy strong pairs events, since I don't know that I (or my partners or teammates) are necessarily up to winning round after round of a Spingold-level event (whereas I've placed in the overalls of national pairs several times and consider that to be fun/successful). While masterpoints are nice (mostly because they help with seeding and such) they're not really important to me.

The issue is, as best I can tell most of what goes on in Gatlinburg is zillions of brackets of KOs. Since I don't have a lot of masterpoints (and many of my partners/teammates don't either) it seems like this would lock us into some bracket in the middle of the field. This means we'd probably play against mediocre competition, and we might well win (and get a bunch of masterpoints because of the zillions of brackets below us) but we won't really get to play against the good players who are in brackets one, two, (and maybe three).

In fact if I want to play KOs it seems like I might do better to play locally, since my chances of talking my way into bracket one are better (since the directors know me and the masterpoint limits are likely to be lower). Despite the fact that the field overall is weaker than Gatlinburg, the opponents I get to face locally might well be stronger....

Or am I missing something?

If you like fun in terms of non bridge, rent a cabin with some friends, super cheap for nice places. Ours had a few hot tubs/pool table/air hockey/grill/arcade/etc and was one of the most fun weeks I've had at a bridge tournament (which usually consists of chilling in a hotel room with crappy wireless lol).

Also, most of my friends who I only see at nationals (3 times a year friends) were in gatlinburg so it was like a 4th naitonal in that sense which made it more fun.

As far as bridge goes, I dunno what to tell you, if you go to a small regional there won't be that many good teams and if you go to a big regional you will be in a lower bracket, kinda sucks.

Hey,

Adam I played there about 5 years ago with my Australian/NZ friends Mark Abraham / Mike Wilkinson, and they had told the director they were international junior champs or something and given a seed worth of about 5000 or 10000 each, which put us in Bracket 2 of 20+. So, just adopt an Aussie accent, piss Rodwell off, and say you are junior world champs!

Thanks,

Dan

It will be interesting to see how the Gatlinburg regional evolves over the next several years. For those of you who don't know, the methods for calculating masterpoints in bracketed ko's is set to change next year.

Instead of counting brackets below yours, the average number of points will determine the award scale.

So, if you are in bracket 5, say, which might average 4000 a person, you will be awarded the same amount, regardless of whether it is the top bracket in a small regional, or the 5th in a place like Gatlinburg. I am not sure how much difference it will make, but we shall see..

I predict the 2008 regional will be the biggest, after that a slow drop off for the next few years.

Danny
