gwnn
Self-explanatory. Google and other such sources is verboten. edit: ok not so self-explanatory. top speed on plane ground, straight line, maximum traction.

hrothgar
Comment 1: In many cases, these types of races are very much a function of distance. The classic example being the distinction between sprint predators and endurance predators. As I recall, horses are faster than humans over short to medium distances. However, in a long distance race, humans can run horses into the dirt. (As I recall, the human's typically win anything over 40 days or so) Comment 2: I have no idea whether bears are faster than rabbits, but I do know that they are damn fast
han
I assumed Csaba meant top speed, seems a natural interpretation. I googled it so won't comment anymore.

Anything over 24 hours an endurance runner can beat a man on a horse. I have a hard time believing that a mustang without a person a top can't beat a human, over any distance. Gerben42
Before the rabbit starts running the bear grabs him with his claws... Then he has all the time in the world. Nature can be cruel... Luckily most bears prefer fish.

cherdano
How should a rabbit beat a bear when a hare can't beat a hedgehog?
andy_h
hmm have no idea. I voted rabbits because they are such cute creatures :) Haven't really seen either run irl before..so I don't know.Besides, my chinese zodiac is rabbit so no way i'm voting for bear :P Gerben: lol the rabbit will start fibonacci-ing it up (somehow) before the bear gets its momentum up for the slash, and will start nibbling the bear left right and centre. pclayton
I'm pretty sure the bear would win. As far as the horse vs human debate - I think a fast person would beat a horse over a maximum of 50 yards, but the horse would have a huge advantage for 1-5 miles (possibly further). The human is a big favorite over very long distances. I'm a rabbit on the Chinese Zodiac too, but I don't see a reason to be biased :)
helene_t
I think it depends on the kind of bear. I have no idea what my zodiac is.

Gerben42
An African or a European bear? I don't know! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGH!
kenrexford
There is no way that a horse carrying a man could possibly be slower, no matter how far the distance or the number of days involved, than a man carrying a horse. gwnn
I'm still to find a perfectly 100% reliable source, but wikipedia claims a bear can have about 35 MPH and a European hare can speed up to 45mph! Elsewhere, in a common table, European hare=35mph, Grizzly bear=30mph. I was very sure and scornful of my classmates who thought a rabbit would be quicker "haha, kindergarten stereotypes". Now I never want to go to school again :) BTW, almost 100% of girls thought a rabbit was quicker and all but one of the guys were supporting the bear. helene_t
Infoplease claims 35 mph (56 km/h, 15.6 m/s) for a domestic rabbit and 30 mph (48 km/t, 13.4 m/s) for a grizzly.

helene_t
Right, they are different genera. The unifying term is "leporid", refering to members of the family Leporidae, but that term is rarely used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare#Classification
bid_em_up
All I know is that I would run a whole helluva lot faster if I was being chased by a bear, than I would if it was a rabbit. Heck, I'd probably even laugh at the rabbit. :)

jkljkl
All I know is that I would run a whole helluva lot faster if I was being chased by a bearTwo hikers on a trail came around the bend to find an enormous brown bear about 75 yards up the trail. The bear spies them and begins running toward them at a full gallop. One hiker drops his backpack, sits down, throws off his boots, and starts lacing up a pair of running shoes. The other hiker says: "What are you doing? You will never outrun that bear!". The first hiker replies: "I don't have to outrun the bear. I only have to outrun you."
