Comment 1: In many cases, these types of races are very much a function of distance. The classic example being the distinction between sprint predators and endurance predators. As I recall, horses are faster than humans over short to medium distances. However, in a long distance race, humans can run horses into the dirt. (As I recall, the human's typically win anything over 40 days or so)

Comment 2: I have no idea whether bears are faster than rabbits, but I do know that they are damn fast

According to Terry Pratchett, humans can out-run horses over very short distances from a standing start, at least on Discworld.

Anything over 24 hours an endurance runner can beat a man on a horse. I have a hard time believing that a mustang without a person a top can't beat a human, over any distance.

hmm have no idea. I voted rabbits because they are such cute creatures :) Haven't really seen either run irl before..so I don't know.

Besides, my chinese zodiac is rabbit so no way i'm voting for bear :P

Gerben: lol the rabbit will start fibonacci-ing it up (somehow) before the bear gets its momentum up for the slash, and will start nibbling the bear left right and centre.

I'm pretty sure the bear would win.

As far as the horse vs human debate - I think a fast person would beat a horse over a maximum of 50 yards, but the horse would have a huge advantage for 1-5 miles (possibly further). The human is a big favorite over very long distances.

I'm a rabbit on the Chinese Zodiac too, but I don't see a reason to be biased :)

I'm still to find a perfectly 100% reliable source, but wikipedia claims a bear can have about 35 MPH and a European hare can speed up to 45mph! Elsewhere, in a common table, European hare=35mph, Grizzly bear=30mph. I was very sure and scornful of my classmates who thought a rabbit would be quicker "haha, kindergarten stereotypes". Now I never want to go to school again :)

BTW, almost 100% of girls thought a rabbit was quicker and all but one of the guys were supporting the bear.

All I know is that I would run a whole helluva lot faster if I was being chased by a bear, than I would if it was a rabbit. Heck, I'd probably even laugh at the rabbit.

Bring out the holy handgrenade! :)

Two hikers on a trail came around the bend to find an enormous brown bear about 75 yards up the trail. The bear spies them and begins running toward them at a full gallop. One hiker drops his backpack, sits down, throws off his boots, and starts lacing up a pair of running shoes. The other hiker says: "What are you doing? You will never outrun that bear!". The first hiker replies: "I don't have to outrun the bear. I only have to outrun you."
