awm
Teams, good opponents: [hv=d=n&v=n&n=st3hajt4dkq63cqt9&s=sa974hk653dcaj654]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] The auction is: 1♦ - P - 1♥ - P2♥ - 3♦ - 4♥ - All Pass The 3♦ bid was natural. The lead is the ♦5, covered by the king and ace. What's your plan?
Guest Jlall
didn't think at all, but intuitively ruff and play a heart to the jack
Codo
I see no disadvantage in trying the King of Hearts first and finesse in trumps at trick 3.
pclayton
I see no disadvantage in trying the King of Hearts first and finesse in trumps at trick 3. I do. I'd like another re-entry to hand in case hearts go 4-1 on my right. I think a heart to the Jack keeps things as fluid as possible. Its also (barely) possible diamonds are 8-1 on this auction. Its also (barely) possible diamonds are 8-1 on this auction. 4-1 Hearts on your right? With the hand with the long diamonds? Possible but maybe not too probably. But anyway, for what do you need the reentry, no matter where the 4-1 hearts are?If hearts are 4-1 on your left, you finesse in Heart, winning in dummy, play the queen of Club. If lho wins the first or second round, you can claim. If they both follow to two rounds of club, but the king does not appear, take the ace of spade, finesse in trump, draw trump and claim. If lho has 4 clubs to the king, play just two rounds with Queeen and ten. He must duck or you can claim. Ruff a diamond. If he overruffs, you can win his possible spade return, draw two more round of club, discarding a spade and play further clubs, intending to overruff if necessary and give a diamond at the end. However the clubs are breaking, your idea is always to play just two rounds. If they win one of these, you always have enough tricks (1 Spade , 1 Diamond, 4 Heart, 4 club). If they duck, you can give up playing clubs and return to the suit later. So the problem is what will happen when diamonds are 8-1 and you loose the trick in Heart to Qx on your right and they get a diamond ruff and a spade switch? In this case you must hope that the club finesse will work. Remote hope yes. But your line does not work then too.
awm
Okay... RHO wins the heart finesse and pushes a spade through. Now what?
Codo
Win, draw last trump and hope for the clubs not being Kxxx on your left?
