Agree that the hand is not nearly good enough for leaping Michaels, 2S is normal.

I don't agree with mike777 that the problem is that 4D shows a much better hand. I think the problem is that you may not make 5D on some hands where partner will bid that and you can make 4S.

Like the hand that partner actually held

But you will never reach 4 Spade in real life opposite a partner with

KJxxx

But 5 Diamond is nicer then 3 NT and after a heart lead. you are home.

Why not? You might note that before I saw the hand I said I would bid 4S because we might want to be in 4S rather than 5D when we have no aces, even opposite a stiff. Voila.

mea culpa, you are right.

Just the lost souls who bid their second suit will reach the inferior 5 Diamond contract.

my first call would be 3 michaels. Then i could pass 3NT if partner decide its good knowing i have 2suiter hand.

I'd rather play 3 as a natural 4m call and 4m as a two-suiter. This prevents us from stopping short of game when we have a 2-suiter, but 3N is more likely to be the right contract when I have a strong minor 1-suiter than when I have a 2-suiter with spades. Also, it allows to bid a GF minor one-suiter without an immediate jump to game.

I bid 4s...

I just think the hand is way too weak in hcp, yes point counting for 4d, on this auction. I guess I am saying vul 2s and then 4d over 3nt I would prefer many more hcp.
