I'll make a responsive double, then if partner rebids 2♠ I'll bid 3♦. Seems like enough if all he can do is rebid my shortness. I am just a little worried about him passing the double, but that doesn't happen often at the 2 level, and who knows if he is all spades and clubs that might be fine anyway.

- South had his pass. He has no particular fit, no particular extras, and nothing good to bid in any case.

- 2♦ is better if north plans to bid 3♥ next when given the chance, might as well get the suits in natural order. I still prefer double though.

Why would partner bid 2♠?

 

To me the auction 1♣-1♠-2♣-Dbl; Pass-2♥-Pass-4♥; a.p. makes perfect sense.

This is analagous to a more common auction, 1S 2C X, p. Here 2D and 2H could be 3, and 2S could be 5. It really depends on the hand.

 

KJxxx xx KQJ Qxx would be an easy 2D bid.

 

Axxxx AQx Qx xxx would be an easy 2H bid.

 

KQJTx Jxx Kxx Qx would be an easy 2S bid.

 

As you can see it really depends on your hand. With hearts as good as QTx and spades decent but not spectacular like AKxxx I would bid 2H as our heart fit will be at least 7 cards when we play there (if partner has 3 hearts and 2 spades he will correct to 2S), and we may have an 8 card heart fit (where partner's hand was not good enough to bid 2H). Our spade fit may be as few as 6 and will never be 8 when it's relevant (ie, when partner would pass 2h).

I have a 5323 hand with nothing in clubs, so we will play a 3-3 fit quickly after the lead. There are hands where we "must" or want to answer with a rebid in a three card suit. But this one does not looks like a good example for this.
