And the bidding starts at.....

I have never heard this sequence. Unless one has put a conventional meaning to it, it must be natural - at least 6-5, probably 6-6, clearly forcing.

Most play this as an autosplinter. Typically shows a hand just short of a 2 opener with values to play game opposite a minimum 1N response.

It invites further bidding if responder has a suitable hand facing diamond shortness.

Once upon a time, this showed a big 2 suiter, but the only pairs that usually play this are strong clubbers.

Check with your partner what 1 - 1N - 4 means. ;)

I play this auction as a one suiter, self splinter, strong slam try, forcing to 4 (hearts are good for one loser at most on this auction for me). I searched through one large BridgeBrowser Database and found this specific auction occurred 44 times.

Seven times the 4D bidder held a void (five different deals). On four of the five deals, the 4D bidder had a one suiter, the other it was a 3 suiter (4-5-0-4)

12 times, the 4D bidder had a singleton (12 unique deals).

Once it was a doubleton with a one suited heart hand

Once it was tripleton AQJ on a 3-5-3-2 hand with Kxxxx in hearts the rest of the world opens 2NT

It was never a four card diamond suit

15 times it was a five card suit (14 unique hands)

8 times it was a six card suit (4 unique hands).

So 17 times it was a splinter, 18 times it was a two suiter. Not sure if that helps.

In SAYC or 2/1, I would interpret it as an autosplinter.

Playing Precision, I would say it was a *weak* two suiter, with at least 12 cards in the two suits. The reason why you'd want to bid such a hand so high should be obvious. It can't be an autosplinter because, well, hands that strong should open 1 club. Mostly.

I can't say it's ever come up for me.

I would not dream of suprising my partner with that bid, since we have never talked about it. If he did it to me (he wouldn't) I would guess it was a diamond control, most likely splinter, and a wish to investigate the heart slam.

Btw, Inquiry, where can we find that BridgeBrowser Database? Sounds like an interesting way to spend a couple of hours.

I have always assumed an autosplinter/selfsplinter.

As I consider the case, however, I wonder if a better meaning might not be the sole meaning never found on bridgebrowser, namely a four-card diamond suit (with solid hearts).

That auction would parallel the auction 1-P-1M-P-4. I would imagine that this might be of greater utility, as it might have a better chance of enabling the discovery of a slam, when the four-card suit hits a fit.

Just a musing...

Yes, autosplinter.

Against sleepy opponents you could agree that it shows a hand that would like to play 4H from partners side.

Does that indicate that Arend is the better declarer in your partnership? :P

It does not. :P
