:P Isn't the north hand a little too good for a non-jump reponse? The diamond void could be HUGE. The actual hand:

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=skq107hakj107dq97cj&w=sj96hq2daj10863ca9&e=s43h864dk542ck876&s=sa852h953dcq105432]399|300|Scoring: IMP

1-Dbl-P-1

2-2-3

P-P-P[/hv]

3 down one was not a success as a vul game was available in either major suit. I was the hapless north. Personally, I don't mind doing the bidding for both sides of the table, some say it's the best feature of my game. Just let me know what the ground rules are.

Interesting hand.

I don't like the initial double. While there are hands where I would double with 4-5 in the majors, I prefer 1H when I have shortness in the unbid minor.

I prefer 2C with the southhand. I don't think the hand is good enough for 2S but it is likely that 2C doesn't end the auction. If I can bid a free 2S next then that gives a pretty accurate description of this hand as with 4-5 I would usually bid spades first.

Having bid 1S initially south needs to make another call in this auction.

Late to the scene here.

2 looks clear to me. Even without looking at the hand diagram, the obvious question is "where are the diamonds"? We are void and pard is supposedly short. LHO either has a lot of diamonds, or pard is rather strong.

Bottom line - we are going to get another shot at this hand and we can afford to show our suits.

I don't care for double with a 4=5=3=1 15 count, but this is partly a matter of style. Its also strange for RHO to pass the double with Kxxx / K.

:P I can't argue with those who would have overcalled 1 the first time - it seemed close to me - only the J10 of and other good spot cards convinced me that doubling first, then bidding hearts over partner's club response was the lesser of two evils.

Justin's non-jump 2 response works out OK. The bidding will go 2-2-2 (by me), and we are off and running to our vul game.

As to why responder sandbagged his two kings and 4 card diamond support, I have no idea. It was a BBO pairs game, and my supposed 'Advanced' pick up partner (from ACBL territory) did most things well enough, just not this one.

Your adv pickup PD's pass of 3 is simply very poor with that hand.

As for 1 vs dbl, I don't mind doubling, but you risk getting buried by PD in or that PD may think you have more when you rebid 2 showing a hand too good to overcall. However, after overcalling 1 you may lose the suit.

That being said, I slightly prefer to overcall.

I'd respond 2 to the double with PD's hand.

Your PD gets the blame on this hand as passing out 3 is awful.

I'm even later than Phil :P

I truly hate the double. And one reason I hate it is that this seems to be a clear 2 call... since my shortness in diamonds combined with my modest high card count lead me to expect to have a chance to bid 2 next (as do others, of course). That would be a near perfect description of my hand, but partners who double with that North hand don't allow their partners to play bridge. If double is the systemic bid, then 1 has to be the systemic response, and that just seems sooo wrong.
