Here are three balancing problems i encountered recently (you're sitting South). Your opinion?

A conservative pass on board 1. I don't like my doubletons in the majors, not great shape, I think I'm far more likely to knock 4 than I am to make 5.

Board 2 I bid 2. It's IMPs. It's a partscore deal (unless p bids again). So I'll bid my longest suit, even if it's a minor, because it rates to be the best partscore.

Board 3 I'm considering bidding 4 because the suit will probably run, minus maybe 1 loser. But I think if this wasn't a bidding poll, I'd probably just play it safe and pass and lead a small .

1. Pass. I hate having to balance 4 openers. You can see why :)

2. 2. This shows 0-10 and hearts, which seems more or less what I have :rolleyes:

3. If RHO is a sound player, pass. If he's a joker, dbl (for take out).

I concur

1) Pass. Sure I feel that they are stealing, but bidding can easily get you into way deeper trouble.

2) 3. Alternatives such as 2 or 2/3 really have no appeal to me. Sure partner can have a bit less in the p/o seat, but I'd rather bid my hand than worry about partner. The problem with a a cue bid here is that I think it denies the other major.

3) X. Not an ideal action given the light HCP hand, but great shape with 9 cards in the majors. Opps. may be fooling around, but even if that's not the case, we'll be OK with any kind of fit with partner; may even have a game. Bidding (instead of X) will garantee that the will get lost.

Peace,

V

1) Pass. Could be wrong. I expect to go plus.

2) 2. Partner balanced. I have what he expects me to have.

3) Pass. If I want to go for four figures, bidding here is a fine idea. It will be right to bid every so often, but when it is wrong, it rates to be very wrong.

Here are three balancing problems i encountered recently (you're sitting South). Your opinion?

1) pass

2) 3C. I have good values and a 5 card suit, if partner passes this he does not have extras, if he does, we can still find our heart fit. Dangit Vali, when are you going to learn to bid your best (and longest) suit first? :ph34r: (btw, one post in a year and half?!?)

2C and 2H are poor choices, imo. You are choosing to show a hand that could be xx xxx xxx xxxxx or xx xxxxx xxx xxx instead of the hand you actually hold. A really good 10 count with a doubleton spade. Much better to lie about being within 1 or two hcp for your bid, than showing what can be a total bust.

3) Pass. Even jokers make sound bids sometimes. If RHO is joking around, partner is also likely to be short in diamonds, if that is the case, he would have been able to take action in the direct seat.

1. Pass is the normal decision, going for our plus score, too many losers for 5. The full board:[hv=n=sajhakxxxd109xxxcx&w=skqxxxxxxhxxdxcqx&e=sxhqj9xdkxxxcj9xx&s=s102h102daqjcak10875]399|300|[/hv]

5 is the only making contract, hard to find after 4 opening

2.Partner held:

[hv=d=e&v=b&s=saxhkq10xdqxxcjxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

My bid was 3, the most legitimate bid for reaching a game. Partener passed, losing 10 IMP's

3. In fact this is a board from BB (Norway-Poland match), but i changed the vulnerabilities (you're red/green in the real board) and added 10 to East hand.

Partner held:

[hv=d=e&v=b&s=saxhkq10xdqxxcjxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

As cards lie NS are cold for 6. The score was 3NT-6 in one room, 3NT-2 in the other, Norway gaining 5 IMP's.
