You are South. Partner opens 1 and RHO overcalls.

A hand from my BIL session this evening. There was much debate over the best call now and I said I'd ask the 'experts of the world' for their opinion.

Double, I wish to let partner know I probably have the other two suits as soon as I possibly can. Then if he bids one, I can be reasonably certain we have found our best fit.

I'm willing to bid clubs later, treating this more like a 4-6 hand due to the poor quality in the heart suit.

Evidently, the BIL's aren't the only ones who will have a lot of debate on this one.

I would bid 2C and gamble on them not bidding 4S next, but I certainly understand 2H and don't know which is better. My clubs are so much better and I have a shot at getting to pattern out so I'm just going to bid the clubs and hope. I really don't want to play a 5-2 heart fit ever.

The bid I really really REALLY dislike is double, it leaves you horribly placed and your hand is well worth bidding 2C now so doubling and bidding clubs is an underbid anyways.

2 for me with a great 6 carder to bid rather than bidding my mediocre 5 card suit. The most likely game for our side (noting that we usually have a decision to make over 4) is 5.

A negative double shows both suits, but here, we have so much distribution and PD won't expect it if we double. Therefore, I prefer 2

I'm in the 2C camp as well - seems most descriptive and least likely to cause much harm.

The main reason I'm against 2H is that it endplays partner in the bidding when I don't have enough hand to justify that action - If he's got something like xxxx, KJ, AKJxx, xx he is pretty well screwed over 1D-(1S)-2H-P-?

I bid 2C here, and 3H when 2S is passed back to me. I strongly prefer just to bid my suits in the natural order when I possible can; if I need to call this hand a game force in order to do so, then I will.

and I said I'd ask the 'experts of the world' for their opinion

Let us know what they say when you hear from them...

The BILlies were equally sceptical ... in fact, I didn't dare publish their thoughts of 'experts'. Interestingly one attendant expert was (appropriately silently) adamant that 2 was the only call.

I'll resume my dictatorial role for the future.

:P Thanks for the lesson everybody. :) I was going to double, but after reading this thread, 2 stands out as the clear winner, and clubs as our most probable strain. All I need from partner for game in clubs is: Axx in and KQ in . Even so, partner could easily be 6-4 in and , and the hand a horrible misfit. So, keeping the bidding level low at this point makes sense.

I opted for 2C because that's what my hand looks like. It would be really convenient if double showed a hand this extreme, but it doesn't for me.

Like others I will bid 3H over 2S. If I had been given the problem as what do you bid over 3S when partner passes 2C, I suspect I would pass.

If I play NFB 2 Club followd by 3 Heart is an extrem nice describtion of this hand.

If 2 Club was meant as forcing and I guess it was, then 3 HEart shows this hand with an additional ace somewhere and I would go the slow route and bid 3 Club as Phil.
