1D for me.

I don't play 1/1 as "100% forcing" by a passed hand.

If we have a major suit game on I would expect to be able to find the fit.

If we have only a partscore on I am no more worried about missing a major fit than a minor fit (at MP it might have been different).

I might be swayed otherwise if partner would open 1D in preference to 1C on a lot of hands with 4 Diamonds.

But on balance I don't expect any choice to have much of a long term gain. Of course anything can be right on a specific occasion.

I don´t see a reason to bid now.

I do not understand why I should play the same system after double then after pass. If I would bid a suit, it would be a 5 card suit.

I doubt that it has much sense to introduce a 4 card suit after rho "promised" length in the majors. If his double is passed to partner, he will sit it with 5 clubs or XX with less. Then I can introduce my hearts.

But as I am in a very small minority, the majority may enlighten me: What are the reasons to bid a four card suit now?

I continue (and seem destined to continue) to be amazed at the variety of answers to simple problems. I can understand 1, altho I would never choose it.

I cannot understand pass. We have a reasonable hand, for a passed hand, and we may have game in hearts, notrump, diamonds or even spades.. and we are going to pass as our first move?

1 completely mystifies me. Just how are we ever finding hearts now? And even if partner is able to reverse, just how informative has our auction been when we raise hearts after bidding xxxx first? And if partner doesn't reverse...say he bids 2... are we really going to show a 5 card spade suit by now bidding a red suit????

1 seems trivial....obvious... no second choice... wtp... clear....

1. Bidding a 4 card suit here is for the birds.... partner doesn't have when he opens 1. Not in my partnerships, anyhow. If he has 4, then he also has 5 and is strong enough to reverse, so I'm not worried about missing a fit.

With such a weak hand, need to bid the s right away and speak my peace quickly.

Yes, there are hands that I would pass as responder after a double by my RHO, but would bid after RHO passes, but this isn't one of them.

I'll bid 1, normal bid in my up-the-line style. There is no particular reason opponents have to have a big spade fit -- I have four of them after all. And even if they do bid 1 or 2 on my left, we play takeout doubles by opener which should enable us to find hearts. If I bid 1 right away, we will have trouble finding our diamond fit with opponents passing. It's fairly likely that this is a partscore hand after all, and I want to find our best spot.

1, disagree with zasanya in all his 3 points. Its not the best suit (it is hearts) 1/1 is 100% forcing, and the only inference from the doubler is that he might have 5 but not 5M

Is Q109X better than AJxx?Always thought the majority play 1/1after a to dbl by RHO as Non Forcing.Always thought that a double of 1 more or less promises both majors. If we have a game in surely P will have another bid.Meanwhile it seems proper to suggest a good lead.Or are we sure hand belongs to us?

:( For some reason at the virtual table (BBO) I had second thoughts about making the 'normal' 1 call, and I wanted to see if it was warranted or 'just me'. Looks like it was mostly 'just me'. Still ....................? :(

1. I think I prefer a diamond to a heart lead against an opponents' spade contract.

2. I'd rather pick off the opponents' putative diamond suit than their heart fit since they might stretch for the game bonus in hearts, and we can get fat with a double.

3. Bidding 1 won't preclude our bidding a makable 4 game. This was the actual situation. Partner held:

A9

A872

K9

AKJ92

4. If partner has a distributional club-diamond hand, I need to get the diamonds in early.

I hate to obsess over these kind of 'bread and butter' bidding situations, but they do tend to come up more frequently than the more interesting and exotic ones.

What are the reasons to bid a four card suit now?

Unluckily, I still got zero reasons WHY all of you bid.

So I repeat my questions just in case you did not tak it serious. It was.

What are the upsides of bidding 1 Heart in this situation compared to passing with 4 card suits and bidding just 5 card suits?

You can find your four-four fits.

You can find your four-four fits.

And some nice 4-3 fits too.
