Do you tend to penalty double on such hands at teams?in the balancing seat as shownin second position over the 1NT bidder (1NT-?)in fourth position over the 1NT bidder (P-P-1NT-?)Paul
whereagles
Pass. Opps probably have a better contract in a major and if you dbl, they'll find it. Even if pard blows the expected trick on lead, this might still go down.
Halo
Pass, that is 'no' to all three questions.
Apollo81
I'd bid a natural 2♦, if able, in both positions
jdonn
I would definitely pass, bidding or doubling will help the opponents find a 4-4 major suit fit that they otherwise would have missed.
Codo
Funny how many opps can find 4/4 fits after 1 NT pass pass X or so.My opps normally cannot. But I agree that this is a reason not to bid 2 Diamond And I would never double, because they may have 8 tricks before I gain the lead. paulg
So I held this hand and double never occurred to me. Actually before it got to me partner had overcalled to show the majors (with his 4414, 8 HCP): I bid 2NT and was happy to make it. At the other table it was passed round to my hand who doubled for -300. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen this happen - hands successfully doubling 1NT when I think it is mad and was doubting my own sanity. Thanks for restoring a little bit of it.
