5, bid what I think I can make.  If LHO bids 5 I can double...

Is such an action double supposed to show spades? I don't think so. If LHO bids 5 I might bid 5 because p didn't double , or I might pass because opps could have missed slam.

Agree with 5 though.

Helene, playing in a 5 card suit with a side 8 card suit is highly dangerous, just give parnter a yarborough 3514 and you make 5 tricks in spades, 9 in diamonds.

But playing with you it would be safe to bid 5 then since you would correct to 6 with only three spades B)

Anyway, I guess you're right, I should just pass. Mission completed.

this is a normal hand for a convention "developed" by a german open player (a doctor, for insiders) - easy 4 opener, long with 5 card major side suit, sometimes for tactical reasons (or if you forget the convention) its only long dias...

4 is +major, same thing with only clubs but for tactical reasons your major may be - but this is very rare (with 4nt beeing both minors)

my junior partner and me adopted this convention, after we saw it beeing used by him in the last Cavendish and we had 3 or 4 hands, we could open 4m

we never argued further bidding exept of penalty doubles, 1400 and 1100 were the only scores we had after these openings

What does this auction show for you Fluffy. Should we assume that partner is an idiot?

1) Partner could have as little as Kxx(x) and a stiff D to make 6S possible!

2) The opps figure to be able to make LOTS of hearts.

3) My pard won't like it but I try 4S!! I'll rescue myself in D if necessary. It rates to win a lot and lose very little. If partner can't take a joke I just bid 2C and rebid D if P bids Hs I hope partner will visualize something like this hand. What would you do with AQxxxx - QJTxxxx - Is this a good understanding?

that's a very interesting opinion for the interesting bridge hands thread.

Firstly I guess you don't mean Kxx of S and a stiff D, but Kxxx of S. Secondly the odds of D and S breaking when you hold an 8-5 shape are somewhat remote to say the least.

Thirdly look at Gonzalo's post above.

Lets put it to the opps - 5D for me.
