Pass for me as well and yes will xx 1H if that happens.

My PD won't likely have a good 17 HCP and 5 and 4 for a simple overcall, so I won't be missing too many games, and if he does, opener may still bid something.

I like 1. Many good effects:

(1) Might find a better fit in spades or diamonds. We could make 4 if partner has some 4-6 in the majors even without a lot of values over there.

(2) Might make it harder for opponents to double us if RHO has a penalty pass in hearts. Usually it's easier to go right if I pass, LHO doubles, and it goes pass-pass and I run, than it is to go right if we continue bidding.

(3) Might "steal" the hand if we don't have much in the way of values.

(4) Gets a spade lead for a heart through if we end up defending notrumps.

This is interesting. Like the discussions about light responses and light overcalls. I play those as sound (as I play sound advances) and I think I'm comfortable with this style, but maybe I don't realize what I lose when I pass hands with which Han/Arend and Justin would bid.

It strikes me as very difficult to find out which style would ultimately be better for me, or for a particular partnership. Analyzing hands with open cards is not the way to do it, I think, because one of the main issues is how it will affect opps' judgement and that is difficult to be objective about.

Trying it out with Jack or similar software won't do it either since the scope for specifying style issues is too crude in the current version. Maybe it will change in the future.

I suppose the best way to refine bidding style is playing a lot online with a regular p against good opps. What Han and Arend do, incidentally.

This arguments are almost just as good for a direct 1 opening with this hand, but the problem is still the same, when instead of weak you are strong you have to pay for your lightness.

I don't think this is close, give me a Queen somewhere and I'd still pass, but then as Helene says it will become a problem of how comfortable you feel rather than what is theorically best.

I know I said 1 wouldn't occur to me but I have to admit this thread is changing my view... I don't think much bad can happen, what will partner who only overcalled do that is so terrible, double them in something because he expects the world for 1?

Fluffy you would really pass AQxxx x xxxxx xx? wow.
