Down at the corner bar, you often hear whippersnappers say, "Other than the U.S., the only countries that haven't adopted the metric system are Liberia and Myanmar."

Actuallly the U.S. legalized the metric system for use here 1866 and established it as the U.S. legal standard in 1893. As a people though, we just don't make changes like that overnight. Tradition is important here.

Our car has a temperature and mileage display that switches between systems. I always set it to metric. When my wife notices, she always changes it back.

But not nearly as much as the Dewey decimal system.

hear hear!

that was invented by the devil. I am fairly sure of that...

My mother was a high school librarian, 30+ years in the business.

When she graduated with her Masters of Library Science, she could make Dewey Decimal System jokes - and tell you what most xxx.xxxx entries were from first principles (if not from memory).

When she retired, she admitted she wasn't quite as up on it; sometimes after the first decimal place she'd have to see the book to know what was going on.

I'd say that kind of minutiae skill freaks me out, but I play Precision with 40 pages of system notes...

Michael.

I was thinking this very same thing this morning. I am frankly ticked off about the great Canadian odometer scandal, as well as the impact of drinking while talking on a cell phone in a motorized vehicle.

Just yesterday, a crazy old coot was driving his lawn mower, one that he bought in Toronto, while text messaging his grand-daughter and drinking Jim Beam from a plastic cup. I went over to complain, and I realized that he did not even have an odometer on his lawn mower. I flipped out. The police were called, BY ME, but they arrested me and took me to a hospital for processing. I just got out today, with a silly ankle bracelet. But, boy am I ticked.

:P Be of good cheer. You are simply ahead of your time.

As my late, sainted mother (God rest her soul) used to often say to me: "Sonny, if you are too drunk to drink, you are too drunk to drive."
