I'll go with 4, planning to bid 5 next if opponents bid 4 and partner can't find a double. I think it's fairly likely opponents are going to bid 4 here regardless of whether I bid or pass, so it seems like my actions should be directed towards making the right decisions over 4 and 5 rather than just "bid 4 to push them to 4."

Another point here is that partner seems to have bid 2 on junk. Certainly something is funny given my 14 hcp with opponents in a game-forcing auction (yes opponents can be stretching and might not have their 25 high, but even if opponents are on 22 this leaves partner with a 4-count).

Typically I don't expect partner to make bids on junk, even at MP, so I expect partner will have some compensating distribution. A major suit 6-5 hand seems surprisingly likely. I'd like to distinguish between:

KTxxxx

xxxxx

-

xx

Here opponents aren't going to make 4. We probably can make 10 tricks in hearts, but no more. With this hand I'd like to either play 4 or defend 4X.

xxxxx

KTxxxx

xx

-

With this hand we probably make 6 (barring an early diamond ruff) and certainly make 5. Opponents could easily make 4 and possibly even 5 or 6 if the red suits break unevenly.

There are also many "in between" hands. It seems like by bidding diamonds:

(1) Partner will happily X 4 if he has six spades or five good ones. He will be especially eager to double with a diamond void, which is good.

(2) Partner will probably bid 4 if he has a 6-5 type hand with short diamonds and 4 passes to him, which we can pass.

(3) Partner will pass 4 with most hands including weak spades, over which we can bid 5.

(4) Partner might raise diamonds with a club void, esp. if opponents bid 4 and partner's spades are weak. This allows us to potentially bid a slam.

Pass, and I dont think, it is close, despite

the votings.

Playing a 4-4 fit on the 4 level, is

not really an intelligent idea.

And I dont impose problems, because

they are already in a forcing pass seq.

Of course we play MP, but the vulnerability

is equal, so we will fight for -2 vs. -3, and

10 tricks is a long way to go.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Why do you think this would be a 4-4 fit? It is clear that partner is bidding on trash. Shouldn't it at least be distributional trash?

Partner rates to be 5-5 despite the 3 bid. 4 should have play.

4, hopefully if the next player bids 4 partner won't double simply because he has length there (obviously I know that already), but only if his spades are good. Thus if he passes I can easily keep bidding.

Sorry to whoever said it but I can't hold back in this case. Pass here* is one of the most amazingly poor pieces of judgment I have ever seen.

* Presuming you intend to pass throughout, obviously you might pass as some sort of attempt to 'walk the dog' and get doubled in 4. At least then I would understand what you are trying to do.

First of all it is a matter of style, and what you believe

consists a min. 2C overcall.

Given that we are speaking about equal vul. partner

wont display complete madness, but at least in my

partnership we strive to go in.

Maybe he has 55, maybe only 54, what do I know.

And maybe they have a slam.

I dont know, and I hate to guess, know your partner,

and you know, if you can bid 4H or not, I pass -

it maybe wrong.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: And I refrain from mentioning, that it may also helpful

to have an idea about your opponents, do they know what

they are doing.

dont worry, I can stand it, and it would not

be the first time I display poor judgement,

but even poor judgement is right sometimes.
