Assuming it is preemptive and with a "to make game" hand partner could cue ♦ I'd pass and hope that the surprising bad trump split helps us set them. mikeh Posted October 1, 2007 Report Share Posted October 1, 2007 I bid 5♥. This is a bit of a guess, but on these hands, it is usually correct to bid one more. I have some chance of making this (picture xxxx Kxxxx xx Kx, they have to find their (possibly non-existent) ruff to beat me most times). And there is some limited chance they can make 5♦. Down 1 both ways is a useful number of imps, but if either contract makes, bidding 5♥ is the big winner, and I think the chances of one or both making (both = unlikely given my blacks) is high enough to take the push. ArtK78 Posted October 1, 2007 Report Share Posted October 1, 2007 This would be an automatic 5♥ bid if my suits were KQxxx KQxxx, or if I were 6-5 (although I haven't worked out what I am going to do if the opps bid on to 6♦). With Axxxx Axxxx there is a significant possibility of going plus against 5♦. I pass. Partner has a better idea of what he has for his 4♥ bid than I do. This pass is not forcing. Assume we play weak or VERY strong 2NT overcall (or maybe we wanted to keep S in the picture which I appreciate myself) but we have foregone the opportunity to show both suits so it is a guess.We know he didn't want to set up a forcing situation with 4D, but unless he has C length we have good defence (looks like 1 trick in each suit but of course he might just have 5H). Finch Posted October 3, 2007 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2007 This time I'm up to 7 passers and 4 bidders, but I still got mikeh and jlall coming down on different sides of the fence, so I'll count it as another successful problem! This is another hand where you know pass is wrong: if 5D is making you want to save; if 5D is going off you want to double. It's wildly improbably that 5H is going for 800. Anyway, I got this one wrong as well when I passed, hoping for 3 defensive tricks. Sadly 5D makes, and 5Hx is -300. Partner has xxxx KJxxx x xxx and declarer's spade loser goes on a club honour.
