matmat
[hv=s=sk7hj63daqcqj7532]133|100|[/hv] i purposely left out the scoring, colors and dealer. how does your choice vary depending on those factors?
Fluffy
13 HCP? When I have that I jsut open my 5 card major, or best minor no matter anything else.
helene_t
Pass is absurd, it's about as close to a strong 1NT as to pass.
Codo
Pass is absurd, it's about as close to a strong 1NT as to pass. I absolutely disagree. This is closer to a strong NT then to a pass. :P IN SEF this is 15 points (13+2) but as there are some downsides, you should downgrade to 1 Club. karlson
I think I would open without the ♦Q, but if you took away the ♥J as well, I'd probably pass.
vang
after i voted "clear opener", i have checked KNR evaluator and learnt that pass is NOT absurd. this hand equals a "good 11" (faaar from 1NT) and pass is ok if you don't open light. http://www.gg.caltech.edu/~jeff/knr.cgi
hrothgar
I consider myself a pretty sound opener playing 2/1 or the like. I'd feel quite comfortable opening 1♣, intending on rebidding 2♣ over most possible responses from partner. (I'm torn if partner advances 1♥) Its interesting that Vang brought up K+R. I'd feel a bit queasy opening 1♣ playing Kaplan - Sheinwold since I don't think that the hand has enough strength for a 2♣ rebid. Playing K-S, I'd either pass or open 1NT. Not sure which is better in the long run.
han
Clear 1C opener and rebid 1NT.
jdonn
Remove the heart jack and passing would still be nuts. Remove the diamond queen instead and THEN we have a very borderline opener (that I suspect almost all of us would still open.)
matmat
I was expecting a few more votes for the borderline/bid option...
skjaeran
Playing a light opening style this is far from a minimum opener for me. Take away the ♥J or the ♦Q and I still open. Take away both and I'll most probably pass even if I actually open some balanced hand with less playing strength.
Guest Jlall
You are overthinking this one, its 13 and a 6 card suit.
ArcLight
Han,You would rebid 1NT? Why not 2♣?

KNR doesn't work for NT hands.2. This is a NT hand.(1. is a bit of an overstatement, 2. isn't.)

matmat
I suspect the punchline is: NEXT! you want a punchline, eh. i was just curious. i consider the hand a borderline opener. i don't think the ♥J or the ♦Q really add that much. i'd probably still open the hand without them... the hand came up when i was watching a bbo team match and it got passed. this surprised me and outraged another kib. i just thought it was a bit odd. Free
You are overthinking this one, its 13 and a 6 card suit. ... and 3 controls. Passing or even thinking about passing will make sure nobody will play with you!

han
I'd open the hand Fluffy gave but not the hand Matmat gave. As for Arclight's question, it seems to me that 1C followed by 1NT is a better discription of my hand than rebidding 2C. I also have some positional values in spades and diamonds that me want to declare even more than usually.
