SchTsch
For me this is a clear 4♠ opening as almost any 74 shape with some meat in the main suit is, and partner has an easy pass.
helene_t
Kathryn, you have 14 cards. Which one should be discarded? I guess we should discard ♦ void :D Xango discards rule.
ArcLight
I dont like 4♠ vulnerable. Id have opened 3♠. You have the boss suit. Pard can bid as well. Maybe the opps bid when they shouldn't and pard can nail them.

Maybe the opps bid when they shouldn't and pard can nail them. if you have the boss suit, why not just open 1♠? imo the hand is too good and p will not raise 3♠ to 4 on a lot of hands where 4 would be cold. . . . skjaeran
Clear pass IMO. Of course you might make slam, but more often you'll go down in five. The opening was OK with me.
ArtK78
I opened on:AQJxxxxxxVJxxx At what form of scoring? Apparently, many of the posters are from outside of the US, and the standards for opening four level vulnerable preempts are less than is typical in the US. I would not open 4♠ vul at IMPs on this hand, but it is close. If you add the ♠10 it is probably good enough. At matchpoints, I don't have any real problem with the opening 4♠ bid at equal vul. I also would not have any problem with an opening 3♠ bid. As far as the responder's problem, I can see why Roland would think about bidding on. I suspect that his standards for an opening 4♠ bid vulnerable are better than many of the posters. There are a lot of vulnerable 4♠ openings on which slam would be a claim. I can also see why the posters are quick to pass as they open 4♠ much lighter than I am used to. So, you have to know your own style to determine whether responder should bid on over 4♠. I know that with one of my partners, if he opened 4♠ at matchpoints and I held the responder's hand, I would pass and hope that he made it. jillybean
4♠ is not for everyone, my preempt style is aggressive.Ben taught me preempts and so had some influence on the style. :D
