whats your bid

Recommended Posts

Passing on the second round is a fairly common mistake. It's important to remember that when partner overcalls at the two-level or above, it promises a good hand. This is particularly true when the opponents have preempted (occasionally in auctions where opponents have shown values partner will stick a lead director in with a poor hand, this is not the case over a weak two bid).

Here, partner has bid at the three level over opponents' weak two, opposite a passed hand. He would not do this with lousy cards. With 11 hcp (essentially the best possible passed hand) we should not pass here. Partner should have at minimum about 14 hcp with 5, or 12 hcp with 6+. Either of these offers good game prospects opposite the hand we hold, and partner could easily be stronger than this.

As to what to bid at second turn, this is a tough hand. I'm sure you'd get votes for 3 (stopper ask primarily), 4 (natural, should promise at least tolerance for hearts), or 4 (the most likely game, partner often has six). Just because it's not clear which of these three calls is best, is not a reason to pass though.

After the pass at second turn, partner has made yet another free bid. It would not be surprising to catch partner with a very good hand on this auction. It seems like partner is 5-5 or more. You have to get to game. I think 5 offers the best chance, although 4 (one trick less after all) is certainly reasonable too.

I think the problem hand is east, not south. Our partner opened 2 and rebid 3 and RHO overcalled 3 and rebid 4. Preferrably the pass before the question mark should be removed.

As for the problem, I'd have opened the hand 1. Having passed I'd have raised to 3 over 2 unless partner is known to be a loonie in 3rd seat.

Having passed twice I'm in trouble now. Just one certain trick on defence and support for partner strongly suggest no double now. Partner rebidding 3 implies a hand normally too strong for a weak 2, which isn't uncommon in 3rd seat. There might possibly be game on in both directions. Too bad I'm unable to bid clubs now below 4 - that might help partner tremendously if opponents bid 5. I'll try 4 now and hope for the best.

Good hand for Western Cuebid, asking for a spade stop.

I would not pass 3. After hearing pard's 2 suiter, I bid 4 and try for the 10 trick game, hoping they are not on three dead spades with me. (unlikely)

#1 Pass is ok, but as always it is a matter of style.

To a degree it depends on the min. strength you require

for the 3H bid, and if you expect, that partner factors in,

that you are a passed hand, in such a way, that the strength

increases.

Personnaly I would expect a min opener with 3H, nothing

more, nothing less. Partner expects, that we may have

a good play for game, if he catches good trump support,

which I dont have.

If you pass, you are conservative, if you bid on, you are

agressive, take your pick.

#2 4H, you still face a risk of loosing 2 spade tricks, because

East did not raise spades, and you may loose a heart trick

With kind regards

Marlowe

What Adam said.

Now 4, partner will often have 6 and even with 5, 4 could easily be the right game.

Btw, West's 3 bid is impossible. If he found his hand worth a 3 bid he should have opened 3. If you had bid game there could be some rationale for sacrificing (he opened less than 4 because he hoped that you would not bid game but when you did, he decided to sacrifice). but now that you ended in 3, he should just let you play that.

As for the 1st-round pass: Opening 1 and rebiding 1NT would show 12-14, right? I that case this hand is a 1-opening IMHO. A stuffed 5-card plus some intermediates is enough to add at least one HCP.
