plaur
Matchpoints, SA with weak two'sp - p - 1♥ - X1NT-2♦What range of hands (HCP and ♦ length) do you have for the 2♦ bid?
mikeh
what is the vulnerability? A question like this, at mps, can't be answered otherwise. If not vul: usually 5 diamonds (altho I can picture a few hands with a 4 card suit), and between 5 and 9 hcp. The more diamonds I hold, the fewer hcp I need, and vice versa. If vul, then I need to be a little bit stronger in playing strength. BTW this is a dangerous auction in that the lack of a heart raise will make me look at my heart length. If I am somewhat short, then either opener has significant length or partner may be offshape, and may well have only 3 diamonds And if I hold 4+♥s, I am going to be worried about dummy being overruffed. These are factors that may persuade me to pass despite holding 5-6 points and 4 decent diamonds. The important thing is that you can't pass 1N safely when you hold any reason to bid.. it puts way too much pressure on your side, whether opener passes or bids. pclayton
Agree with what Mike says about 2♦. At MPs, it can be little more than a lead director. As far as stronger actions a penalty double of 1N is available (if its not played as responsive), and that 3♦ can either be played as blocking, or should be a hand with a higher ODR than a penalty double of 1N. P_Marlowe
Hi, Assuming, the t/o showed shortagein hearts, i.e. the guy who made thet/o bid has at most two hearts and not just opening strength with spades: #1 4 diamonds are enough, but most of the time it will be a 5 carder.#2 Competitive values are enough With kind regardsMarlowe
