4 is clear. Besides the various zero counts that produce game, there is also the issue of what the opponents can make (or go down less than the value of our partial).

Partner's bid informs us that we have only two sure defensive tricks - and maybe not that many. So, bid 'em up.

It seems likely that opponents don't have a huge fit anywhere. This means if partner has shortness, it's probably in hearts. Would partner bid 3 with no points and no shortage? If so maybe pass is right, but I think for most of us 3 bid promises some playing strength. Either of these give decent odds for game:

xxxx

xx

Kxx

xxxx

(needs spades 2-1)

Qxxx

x

Qxxx

xxxx

(needs either a non-trump lead or diamond king on)

I'd take my shot at 4. If partner really does have nothing, at least the opponents may have been talked out of a game (although I might've bought the hand for 3 too).

I lean towards 4 and hope PD has something and a useful ruffing value.

As a Bergen raise player I have been toying with the idea where 3 shows the usual single raise with 4 card support, and 3 rather than showing a limit raise shows a weaker raise than a single raise but with a few HCP. Then the raise to 3M is truly premeptive. You'll play J2N Plus with all the limit raise or better hands.

However, that method seems to make it easier for the opps to whack 3 and/or to play opener for almost every missing high card.

Especially with and as long as you don't fear 4 or 5m (rarely will they play and make 3NT if you don't preempt, I think you should have a little something more than a Yarborough to bid 3.

OK 4 for me ... neilkaz ..

1. If pd has the real zero point raise: xxxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, they make 5 in each minor without a finesse and it is much harder for them to compete over 4 Spade then over 3.

2. If pd has just a little more, game is good.

3. The LOTT is with you.

Easy.

the guy that couldn't find a call over 1s will all of a sudden come alive at the 4 level, red?

Imo any hand which can see a good possibility for game shouldn't bid 3 here, especially with this vulnerability! So 3 should be first class rubbish... No?

Qxxx x xxx xxxx

All rubbish. All have reasonable play for 4S. And these are some of the worst hands partner could have. Why should any of these hands see a possibility of game?

In most cases, you can almost be 100% certain that partner will have a stiff heart. If he is truly broke, he must have compensating shortness somewhere, and after taking into consideration your 3 minor suit cards and the opponents failure to bid, his shortness is not in a minor.

The most likely scenario is that LHO is 2-3-4-4 (or 3-2-4-4) and had no good call over 1S and RHO has 5 or 6 hearts but not enough to freely step into this auction. If you pass now, a competent LHO will double realizing his partner is short in spades and they will reach 4H. If you're going to be forced to bid 4S anyway, you may as well do it now.

I vote for pass. I don't think its likely we will make game. We are not vulnerable so there is no reason to try for the 38% game, which I wouldn't do anyway.

Openers LHO didn't double so maybe the opps dont have game. It might not be so likely that responder has a singleton heart.
