Interference fringes.

playing against a very good pair with a pickup, but seemingly decent p, you pick up:

[hv=d=n&v=b&s=s4ha984daqjt3ck93]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

your p passes as dealer, RHO opens the bidding 1NT

do you interfere? if so, how so?

does it depend for you on whether you can get both suits in?

where do you expect for the hand to end up if you do interfere? if you don't interfere?

Edited not to insult hannie's sensibility.

Since you played this hand in the main bridge club on BBO with an unknown partner I would just ask what your partner prefers to play. For your competent (!!!) opponents it is probably also less fun if you bid 2D and your partner takes this as the majors.

If Woolsey, I'd double. If DONT, I'd bid 2D. If nothing, I'd bid 2D. If Capp, I guess I shouldn't have asked.

I would always bid with this hand. 2 in dont, DBL in woolsey, etc. If playing something like capp (ugh) I would bid 2 to show just diamonds and plan on doubling 2 by the opponents. I think partner is entitled to assume 2 for hearts and a minor will have five hearts.

I bid. Recently have been playing molson: 2 to show 4s and a longer minor. I have some reservations about the 2Major overcalls, but so far we haven't had any bad results... eventually we will go for a number but all methods carry that risk.

2minor = 4+ minor and 5+ major

double = s or majors or single suit major.

Can't bid a single suited diamond o'call at the 2-level.

Before you all completely dismiss a pass, consider a few things:

1. If the bidding continues p - p - p and pard has a card or two, I feel very comfortable that we can set 1N, perhaps 2. I don't need to catch pard with a fit. To make 2 or 2 we need to catch a partial fit. This is IMPs so all we should be looking for is a way to earn a plus score.

2. Say we drag out the magical Woolsey double. LHO with 4-4 in the majors gladly passes and doubles 2 after pard's likely p/c 2 and they find their 4-4 spade fit. With a modest hand with 4-4, its very likely our LHO will pass 1N with the hope his LHO will balance.

3. To me, the biggest upside to bidding is the chance of locating 4, but no one seems to have a plan how that can be achieved when it is right.

4. As I said before, I will balance over 2 if LHO transfers which is a nice description of this hand.

5. If they somehow bash this into 3N, 4 or 4 I will be very pleased I didn't open my mouth.

I can't imagine passing if playing Woolsey, how can you pass if you can describe your hand so well at a safe level (partner will probably be able to figure out you have hearts on opponents bidding and his hand) and prepare for the likely partscore battle. LHO passing with 4-4 majors if we pass but finding their spade fit if we bid seems a very unlikely scenario.

However, bidding say a 2 Cappelletti sucks IMO, partner has no idea what we have if they bid 2S, and I would have described my hand much better by passing and doubling 2S, even if it is in a live auction. If it goes 1N 2C 2S P P we probably have to double, so what did we gain by bidding 2? We have a 3-suiter after all not a one-suiter with side suits.
