MP: Re-compete ?

Sathya - what kind of hand are you concerned partner may have where we need to protect a 2nd time? Pard heard both of our calls and chose not to compete over 2 or 3. I would agree that we have close to a maximum for even 2, but its not like we have significanty undisclosed values.

My gut says that pard has something like Kxxxxx, xxx, xx, xx and that 3 is a playable contract. However, its also very possible that 3 will convert a small plus into a small minus. Against 3, the hand will play rather awkwardly even if spades are 3-2 and the Q is on. The defense cashes club, club and shifts to a heart. We play spade to hand and a diamond up. The defense wins and plays a heart. To suceed here, you pretty much need a doubleton Q to fall now. Pretty remore odds if you ask me.

So even with a very friendly layout, we are a long way from 9 tricks. If you are suggesting we try to obtain a good board by being -1 (-100) and avoid a double, you aren't going to get very far with that argument.

So perhaps you are suggesting defending 3 x'd? For the result to be significant, we need to get it -2. I doubt is +50 and +100 (they are NV) is a huge difference on the recap. 2, 2, 1, and, and? Put the Q offside and -470 is a huge concern.

Its very possible that we have put ourselves in a positive position with 2. I seldom ever get uptight about defending 2 or 3 of a minor at MPs anyway.

Did this hand come up at the table. If so, was this your partner's hand or yours?

I prefer 2 over 1 to be natural and 2/ to be weak/strong Michaels.

And I'd be much happier playing that. When I play 2 as natural, I don't have this problem. I don't know what a double as a 3rd call by me should mean in that instance, probably just "action"/"extras".

If I overcalled 1 and 2 from LHO came back to me I'd pass and take the plus score.

I would think there must be some point count you could have where you wouldn't be satisfied with just a plus score.

Well, with RHO opening the bidding and LHO supporting, partner silent and they want to play in my longest and strongest suit, I really need a huge hand to expect scoring a game. Sure, if I had 8 more or less certain tricks and needed a stray jack or lenght in my 2nd suit from partner to come to 9 I'd bid 3NT. I'd not care much for my point count - it's tricks I need to make game.

Yes, I think it is obvious to pass now. We have shown a good hand with 5+ diamonds and 4 hearts, that's what we have. Acting again would be an insult to partner.

With 3-4-5-1 I would typically double the first time around.

How good a hand do you need, to compete over 2c ? In an auction where only minors have been mentioned and it comes back to you at the 2-level, it's practically forcing at MP. I wouldn't pass if my Ace of spades were replaced by the decuce for instance.

Having said that, I am not suggesting that I'd bid again with this hand just because I could have made the same bid with a weaker hand. I realize you can't have a bid for every additional Ace. But may be the auction wouldn't have come back to you at the two level, if you were an Ace short. May be someone else at the table would find a bid over 2c.

It looks as though your LHO has a 'tweener, not quite weak enough to bid 3c the first time, but not strong enough for an action like say double over 2h showing cards perhaps ? Given that what should your partner expect if you did double 3c ?

I would never consider a second bid with a hand worth less than about a 13 count and good shape (when partner does not invite action), and a hand worth 15ish is more typical lacking the shape for a takeout x (if partner had values without much length in their suits he would have bid). I think after 2H here you have bid your wad....
