For me it is none of the above. It is when you have to play the hand in your mind to come out with the best bid. I first experienced that in relay (when partner's hand was more or less known to me and I had to work out the play of the hand to decide whether I wanted to be in 6 or 7), but has happened subsequently with a more natural system.

Maybe I should answer: when I open 1NT because I usually get to play the hand. But this wasn't an option.

So I picked when partner opens 1NT, because I feel like I have very good judgement in this situation and I'm convinced that I play better methods over 1NT than the vast majority of bridge players. Plus I trust partner's play too. :)

Usually when partner opens with a preempt, I'm terrified. ;)

I always feel good when I feel I've given the opponents a tough decision by preempting. Slightly aggressive raises to 4H seem good for this, especially after 1H-P - any weak hand with 1=4 in the majors qualifies for a 4H bid (assuming partner was dealer).

Five-over-five stuff is good too, as are systemic gains. I almost had my perfect auction the other day -

2NT (P) 4H (4S)

5H (5S) AP

2NT showed 5-5 in hearts and a minor, weak. The 5H bid was based on a 0562 (maybe this should systemically double, but it was undiscussed). Unfortunately, the opponents had done the right thing

I voted for when I bid blackwood. I use keycard infrequently, compared to most. So when I bid it, I have every expectation of bidding a slam or a grand..even when the response is disappointing, I don't know that when I bid keycard..

Penalty double was my second choice, but sometimes the penalty double is not enjoyable... you double a save, for example, knowing that it is probably a good save, and we are getting a poor result. A penalty double where we have 'got' them feels good, but many doubles lack that level of confidence.
