Finch
seems a fairly standout pass to me.You are the wrong shape and the wrong strength to bid 1NT.I see little merit in a 1S call.
mike777
1S You either agree to overcall one spade or bid something with these hands(14+hcp, 4 spades) or not. My partners tell me to get in their and mix it up, in and out fast and at low levels.
Gerben42
I'll pass the bucket around to my LHO. "Bridge is a bidder's game" doesn't mean you can never pass.
P_Marlowe
Hi, I pass. If you cant stand it, which would be fair enough, than you have to choose between 1S and 1NT. I slightly prefer 1S, but the suit is too weak, add the ten, and I would most likely do it. With kind regardsMarlowe
han
I pass, the hand is too strong for a 1S overcall.
kenrexford
1♠ or 1NT, depending upon style.
han
I don't have any problems with 1NT btw, I don't agree with Frances that you have the wrong strength. Q10xx of hearts behind opener is pretty good, and the concentration of black suits is also nice. I'd consider this a normal 15-count. Of course, I do agree with her that this is not a balanced hand, but I prefer 1NT over 1S.
neilkaz
15 HCP and a likely double stop but the opps may lead ♦ vs NT. I have a slight preference for 1NT rather than 1♠ since I'd prefer (not manditory for me) a slightly better suit for 1♠. Passing this honestly doesn't cross my mind as I have two possible bids, albeit both are slightly (IMHO) flawed, but either is better, FMI, than trying to compete later. Just my opinion .. neilkaz .. the hog
Pass, but this is very close. Give me the J of S and I overcall 1S for sure. I considered 1NT, but there is no real source of tricks, apart from C, in the hand. Also the fact that partner is a passed hand mitigates against 1NT. Impact
Ron, Surely "militates" rather than "mitigates" - shame on you!! This is actually a pretty good hand for 1NT as the H values are slow, but I would like another T (S and/or C), so I think it is very close a s a judgement call between Pass which I favour, and 1NT. regards
skjaeran
I'd like the ♠T to overcall 1♠ here.So the alternatives are pass and 1NT. It's close, but I'll go with the passers.
helene_t
1NT with a pickup p, I think this hand is a tad weak in at least one regular partnership, though, in which case would pass. 1♠ does not appeal.
pclayton
1♠ or pass. 1N feels wrong.
jdonn
Personally I dislike 1NT but only just a little, and I dislike 1♠ a fair amount, though these are essentially style issues. However, though I can see why someone would choose either bid, I think in a B/I setting it is clearly correct to recommend a pass. This hand does not meet the requirements for either bidding alternative in terms of what should be taught to new players. Anyone choosing either option would be 'breaking a rule', whether rightly or wrongly. It is a valuable lesson that it is ok to pass on hands that are good enough to bid but have no appropriate action to take.
