There are some warning signs here.

I would not bid 3 on this hand: I'd like to have a 6th card in the suit, but it is not a horrible bid. In fact, if I felt that partner was likely to be on lead against a suit, I'd risk the call for the lead-directing benefit. I'm not as worried about the lead against 3N, since I hold 10xx in diamonds and spade control.

As it is, LHO has announced a heart holding such as AJ9x and his partner has pulled the penalty double. So it looks to me as if partner has xx or (more likely) xxx in hearts, and with that delicious :P club holding, the defence to 4 is easy to forsee: heart to the A, heart ruff, club to the Queen, heart ruff, club to the Ace, club with RHO scoring 3 trump tricks from Jxx :)

So in hindsight, I am happy to have bid 3 because the opps have told me not to bid anymore.

I am picturing partner with x xxx AQJxxx xxx and LHO with Jx AJ9x x AQxxxx and RHO with KQ10xxxx x Kxx xx (i don't care where the club J is :P )

Now, of course, the actual hands will be different, but I cannot construct a hand consistent with the auction on which 4 is probably a good call at this point.

And while I am now happy with 3, I would have bid 3.. it preempts clubs as effectively as 3... and I'd expect to be on lead most of the time.

Kathryn, if you play that changes of suit after an overcall are forcing, then you should bid 2H on the second auction. Partner has bid 2D vul and should have a decent hand. If cos is non forcing, then I would double.

On the first hand I would not have introduced the H suit and would have raised Ds; certainly pass now.

#1 Pass,

I think 3H is ok, and it should show at least

diamond tolerance, but there are posters on

this forum, who are clearly better than me,

and who disagree with me.

Given the bal. shape I may not have made

the bid, but I would defend my partner,

... I always do, even if he was completly nuts,

I have to, since he plays with me.

#2 2H is ok, forcing / nonforcing, I prefer the later,

you have a exit plan in case it gets ugly

With kind regards

Marlowe

In your second auction I would double, which typically shows 5 hearts and 2+ diamonds (snap-dragon, which is just a fancy word for a takeout double in this position). 2 is ok if forcing, but actually I am not sure whether that is standard.

I think NF Constructive is standard, but I'm happy with that. If your partner passes with 2-3 hearts and a 10 count, are you seriously going to be upset?

If 2 is NF and constructive, I think partner should often pass with a singleton. I don't like that.

Why would anyone bid 2H? That seems like a really 1980s bid, I thought the Italians have taught us by now that you can just X with a hand like this. If partner bids 2D you can bid 2H to show exactly what you have (or maybe a bit more, depending on your overcalling style).

Change the auction:

Dealer: West Vul: All Scoring: IMP A94 KQ987 T65 K5

West North East South

1 1 1 ?

Now is the correct bid, showing support later if needed.

Here I double, showing 5c and tolerance.
