1 1 2 2

4 4 ?[/hv]

You are vulnerable against not.

Partner dealt.

Pass over 4 is NOT forcing (hence the two of a non-kind)

You and your partner are fairly solid players

LHO is sometimes imaginative in the auction

RHO is hyper-aggressive in the auction

(same players as the other hand, but rotated)

I'd pass and leave it to pard (yes I realize pass is not forcing, if he passes it out that's fine with me). If pard has a red 2 suiter or something I definitely want him to feel free to bid.

I'm actually happy that the pass is non-forcing. I can pass and await (non) developments. Partner is still there, and if being there means saying 'no questions' as I choose my lead, that is probably the correct answer.

Were my pass forcing, I'd have to double, but I wouldn't like it.. this is too likely to make, while, on those hands, 5 rates to fail (we will be losing at least 3 black suit tricks)

I'll double here. Several points:

(1) I have Qxx. Regardless of whether this is a trick on defense, this is two points that I'm supposed to have which are not working on offense. Such a holding implies that defending may be better.

(2) My hearts are Axxxx. This delivers a likely defensive trick, but is a weak enough suit that we may lose a trump trick in 5. Note that many minimum 2 bids include a six-card suit, which I don't have.

(3) I have only two diamonds. While KQ may help solidify partner's suit, they don't particularly argue that we should declare. After all, we're still fairly likely to have two diamond tricks on defense. This is very different from holding KQxx where the unshown double fit will reduce our defensive potential.

(4) Double is not a command to partner to pass. If partner has some 0562 hand or the like I expect him to bid on in any case.

If this is not a double, what is? I'm not going to have a big stack of spades on this auction.

I doubled at the table, but I think that was wrong, and agree with the passers.

Double = -590

Pass = -200 in 5 red doubled (partner will bid 5D if you pass).

Partner is actually 1471.
