You are Non-vul, opponents Vul

LHO dealt

Partner's pass of 5 is forcing

You are playing with and against good players. You know all the players at the table extremely well. Partner and LHO are fairly down-the-middle solid bidders. RHO is hyper-aggressive in the auction.

Well I voted before Justin posted but had the same answer. Sounds like LHO and CHO both have AQxxx in a minor.

Paul

Would partner pass 5H (rather than bid) with 5-5 in spades and a minor and obvious heart shortage?

Also, your Michaels style is 'continuous' i.e. partner will cue on many hands with 5-5 and doesn't have an 'inbetween' type hand.

Note also that LHO didn't bid 5minor. Maybe LHO wouldn't do so if she knew what she wanted to do over 5S, or didn't want to alert you to a double fit; but some of the time LHO has a two suiter surely she'd bid the second suit?

I bid 5. Even if this is wrong, double-dummy (and I don't expect it to be), RHO may need to find the right minor suit lead to beat it.

This is a pinochle deck: but I can see how this could happen.

I'm thinking lho is 0=7 in the majors, and partner 6=0. Give partner KQxxxx void Qxx AQxx and we have missed an easy slam, with lho vod KQ109xxx AJxx xx and RHO earning his kamikaze reputation. But that's too much: isn't it? :P

As always there's a spectrum of hands for partner:

Freak distributional hand always bids on.

Hand with substantial values in hearts always doubles.

But what about hands with singleton heart vs. two small hearts? There are several styles of forcing pass here...

(1) Forcing pass promises singleton (or void) heart, two small hearts doubles. In this case I like bidding 5.

(2) Forcing pass promises two (or more) small hearts, short hearts bids on directly. In this case I like double.

(3) Forcing pass could be either singleton or small doubleton heart. In this case I still prefer double, although without much confidence. It seems very likely that 5 will be one off (we get two minor suit tricks and the heart ace) whereas 5 is unlikely to make if we have a heart loser, and there is some chance we get 500 against 5X to trade off against the times we do make 5.

Someone overbid, and it is likelly East.

Partner's most likelly hand is KQJxx-x-xxx-AQ10x or reversed minors. And it will be a double swing hand. So bid 5.

Not bad.

Partner's hand is KQJxx x xxx A10xx and it is a double swing hand.

(I was the 5H bidder and had - KQ9xxx AJ xxxxx and dummy in 5Hx has xxx J10xx Qxxxx Q) I thought it was probably a red save, but it was pleasantly surprised with +850.
