han
Is this one obvious? [hv=d=n&v=n&s=saxxha109xxxdqjcqx]133|100|Scoring: IMP1D - (2S) - 3H - (3S)4H - (p) - p - (4S)p - (p) - ??[/hv]

markleon
I'm bidding 5♥. I'm always suspicious of competent opponents who "walk the dog."
han
Red against white, your RHO deals and opens 1D. What is your call with: AQ9xAxQxQJ9xx Maybe you could list your top 3 calls... (was planning to make a new thread. multi tasking...)
whereagles
1st problem: dbl, yeah it seems obvious with such a defensive hand. Can backfire, but hey.. it's a guess. 2nd: well.. let me see1. 2♣2. 1NT3. pass
Finch
Question 1: Is it obvious? No.At matchpoints it's obvious to bid, as we were making 4H and they are likely to be cheaper than our game. I think I bid. Partner has a singleton spade (not just the auction, but his pass of 4S indicates this as well) so he is either 1444 or has 5 diamonds. Opposite a 1354 we can be making a lot of tricks (x Kxx A109xx Kxxx is a 10-count that has play for 6H and we aren't getting rich out of 4S). skjaeran
On the first hand I'll try 5♥ after partner's forcing pass. I don't think we'll get rich defending 4♠, +300 at most I believe. The ♦QJ are great cards here. I think we're favourites to make 5♥. On the 2nd hand I'd rate:1: 1♠2: 1NT3: pass4: 2♣ (I don't like it, but it's an option.) kfay
I bid 5♥ on the first problem all day and for your second question: 1) 1♠2) 1♠3) 1♠
Rebound
I bid 5♥ on the first problem all day and for your second question: 1) 1♠2) 1♠3) 1♠ ditto... with the usual "i'm no expert" disclaimer

CSGibson
Red against white, your RHO deals and opens 1D. What is your call with: AQ9xAxQxQJ9xx Maybe you could list your top 3 calls... (was planning to make a new thread. multi tasking...) 1. 2♣. This bid has obvious advantages and drawbacks. The advantage is that it describes the shape of your hand, it makes it harder for the opponents to find their potential heart fit, and it sets you up for a cheap 2♠ bid later if the auction comes back around to you, describing pretty well your shape and approximate playing strength. 2. 1♠. Lead directional for sure, but the drawback is that you would make this bid on a variety of hands, anywhere from a lead directional 8 count to 16. I have no idea who's hand it is now, but this bid allows for an easy negative double when it is their hand. 3. 1NT. Stoppers are for beginners! Guest Jlall
1. 1S2. 2C3. pass4. 1N I think the first 3 are very close, with 1N a bit behind. Every bid has extremely glaring flaws.
joker_gib
5♥ : With partner forcing pass, we have a good chance at the 5-level. For the second hand, idem Justin : 1S2CPass But never 1NT : I'm a beginner and need a stopper ! :P Alain
Fluffy
On first I think I need at least some extra to bid on, I have nothing over what I already showed, I'd double. On the second 1♠ is obvious to me, 1NT second choice, third choice is close between double, pass and 2♣.
han
On the first hand partner (me) had x KJx A109xxx Axx. 5H makes and you don't get rich defending 4S. The second hand came up in a BIL match where the players talked to the kibitzers about their thoughts. Inquiry chose to bid 1S. I had a bet about this hand with a friend, I won. :P
jchiu
On the first problem, 5♥. I think it is percentage, but not obvious. On the second problem, I would overcall 1♠. Third problem, what would you do with the hand in the second problem if RHO opens 2♠ at unfavourable in front of you?
han
Third problem, what would you do with the hand in the second problem if RHO opens 2♠ at unfavourable in front of you? I'd bid 2NT at all colors but favorable, then I'd hope to defend (preferably doubled). I think the hand is certainly good enough for 2NT.
