Hi Jilly,

I like bidding 2S more than doubling with this hand type. Xing will make it hard to find 5-3 spade fits unless I X and bid spades which would be a big overbid. Doubling can certainly work well, but I think it's better to get my 5 card major in and hope for the best.

If there is a game to be made, particularly 4, it will probably be reached only if we don't pass. There are two reasons for this:

-we have the majority of HCP for that game

-we have shorter hearts than p. he will look at his hand with 3 or even 4 hearts and say "look, partner didn't act over 2. that means he (she?) has nuttin." Jxxx Jxx KQx Kxx

is certainly going to pass it out. a passed hand is not barred from reopening, but a passed hand with 3+ hearts is.

As to why 2>double, it has already been explained very nicely. One more point: double would be a very good choice on some moth-eaten spade suit like

even though this really starts to look like a pass.

2 it was. The result 2X-4 made me wonder about the bid, 2nd seat preempt should be been solid, partner a passed hand,Qx etc. Of course I got to play against the only EW to leave in the X :)
