This is a clear cut pass in second seat. My second choice would be a weak 2♦ opener.

I'm comparing this hand to the hand Ralph proposed:

♠ 5 ♥ AT94 ♦AKT7 ♣9865

 

On Double's, I have no rebid issues. I also have spades...I like spades.

 

I think Aces and Kings tend to get overrated on partials. I mean, on a 4-3-2-1 scale they're underrated, but people tend to overcompensate. The 'heavy' scales include slam tries and suchlike, and I seriously doubt that if either hand gets passed out that we missed a game.

 

Would you rather have AKTx across xxxx, or KQJxx across xxxx? I know which one I like. I think Double's hand is better on offense. On defense, Double's is clearly the worse hand, but that's more of a reason to open it. It also doesn't strike me as a hand I'd like to bid defensively. Doubling 1 heart risks us ending up in spades in a 4-3 fit with no honors, or at 3 clubs on a 4-3 fit. Overcalling two diamonds risks losing the spade suit.

 

I don't like opening either of them, but I feel more comfortable opening Double's than Ralph's. If (outside of the singleton) it had two 10s and two 9s like Ralph's, I'd probably open it if I was feeling frisky.

This is very close, it would depend on my mood. I normally won't open 5431 10 counts, but the diamonds are very nice...

 

With a pickup pd I pass, too many of them are rigid point counters, no sense in alienating partner on a marginal hand.

It would have an easy rebid and trick taking potential minus the ace of clubs also. That doesn't make it good enough to open :D
