mr1303
1S for me. Because I have the spade suit. If I held hearts I might well consider a 3H opening, but I see no reason to pre-empt here.
Fluffy
I open one, but I consider 2 and 3 (never 4 sorry). I don't like 2♠, I'd open 3♠ against opponents who are stronger than us.
Walddk
I open 1♠; call me a simple soul. I don't like to experiment with 2 or 3♠ although 2♠ could work well. However, the problem with pre-empting is that partner may bid on where we should have defended. I have excellent cards for defence. the hog
Do I read this correctly, - we are first in hand? Why on earth would you even contemplate any other bid apart from 1S? 2S is crazy.
mike777
1s if open on junk2s if open on super sound. For those who have no idea what super sound means...reread 1950 bridge.2007 bridge mostly open on junk.
Codo
If I read the auction corecct, we are south as always in a problem and I would think about 2 ♠ before choosing 1 Spade for the reasons Roland gave.In first hand this is a no brainer and no alternative 1 Spade opening bid. For Gerben: Even in Wüppsietälsie Kärö.....
Gerben42
We are South, dealer is North, i.e. 3rd seat (see topic)
hotShot
The average strength of a first hand pass is 8 HCP, the second hands average is a little less than 9 HCP. So if the bidding goes pass - pass 3rd and 4th hand share 23+ HCP.Holding 11 HCP of these, means that that LHO has 12+ HCP and his side will have about 21 hcp on average. I don't think that opps can double 2♠ and they won't have game. So bidding a final 2♠ seems appropriate.
vang
probably some of the voters didn't noticed we are in 3rd position. i'll vote for 2S in 3rd (but a normal 1S in 1st).
Finch
I would open 1S most of the time.I don't mind 2S if in the mood.3S is not totally absurd, although I wouldn't usually. Only 4S is completely off base, IMO.
ochinko
I have a good 6 cards spade suit that I'd be willing to bid to second level, right? So why would I not bid it right away given that partner is a passed hand? Opps are most likely to compete in hearts where I am short, so I must take away at least some space from them. The only downside to 2♠ is that we could miss a game. I don't think that's too probable though given that I have a 7 loser hand, and partner should have more than 7. In short, I bid 2♠ at all vulns and forms of scoring, and there's no other call I would consider.
jtfanclub
If partner has xxxxxxxxKxxxx we've got a good shot at game. We have Minisplinters available in my preferred system, and while I wouldn't expect to find game across this particular hand, there's lots of game possibilities here. I bid 1 spade. I save 2 spades for hands that don't have a reasonable shot of game across a passed hand.
skjaeran
Playing Drury and Minisplinters, I'd open this 1♠. 2♠ is also quite OK by me - I don't mix up my 3rd seat 2-level openings normally.
ochinko
If partner has xxxxxxxxKxxxx we've got a good shot at game. With that hand I expect my partner to bid the same number of spades as opps would bid in hearts up to level four. (If I open 2♠, that is.) Come on, we haven't thrown away all that we've learned in the good all days when we believed in the Law, have we? inquiry
1♠ and i am not considering any other bid.
TimG
Why hasn't Richard told us that the right thing to do is open 1♠60% of the time, 2♠35% of the time and 1NT 5% of the time?
pclayton
1♠. I would open this 3♠ after, say, 4 cups of coffee.
pbleighton
1S seems clear. We may well have game opposite a passed hand, so 2S and 3S are out playing standard methods, and this isn't the hand to open 4S. Peter
bid_em_up
1♠. I would open this 3♠ after, say, 4 cups of coffee. I would open this 3♠ after, say, 4 cups of Irish coffee. <_<
jtfanclub
With that hand I expect my partner to bid the same number of spades as opps would bid in hearts up to level four. (If I open 2♠, that is.) Come on, we haven't thrown away all that we've learned in the good all days when we believed in the Law, have we? You and your partner have 5 hearts between you. The LAW tells the opponents to not bid above 3 hearts. I doubt they're going to bid 4 of a minor, and if the opponents' hearts split 4-4 they'll probably let you play it in 2 spades. I don't expect my partner to have 3 hcp. But you can throw in another 7 hcp and you still want to be in game. You need partner to have a singleton and a trick in a minor. If my partner can Minisplinter I'll happily be in game.
han
I open 1S on this hand. I won't tell you that it is wrong to open 2S, it is just not my style. I would never open 3S, let alone 4S.
Echognome
Somewhat systemic here. In a light opening system or opposite a partner that opens fairly agressively, I'm opening 2♠. In a more sound opening system, it will have to be 1♠.
jdonn
Somewhat similar to some of the others, I prefer 1, don't have any serious qualms with 2 although I wouldn't want to do it any heavier than this, and think 3 is pretty ridiculous. 4 was probably included just to give the poll some kind of symmetry? Guest Jlall
Surprised all the love 2 is getting, and 3... I would never open this anything but
