Opps opened

I bid 1

Partner supported to 2

Opener DOUBLED

And now it was my turn. What would you bid?

I expected my partner to have 3+ and 6 to 9 points.

I know my bid was a little to much - I bid 4 .

I went 3 down.

And partner said that she/he never heard of bidding like this on only 8 points etc.

Agree.

But taken in consideration - Partner has 3+ , 6 to 9 points, and mine - I was quite sure of 4 making their way, so why not make it very difficult for them to find?

My dear partner said that 2 promises 6 to 9 points - and 2 TOP honours - that was new to me - so I was surprised to find only AQ.

Anyhow 3 down wasn't the best result.

The full hand:

4 makeable?

I voted for pass, but I am not very good at MP tactics.

I am not keen on the initial 1H overcall, so perhaps I would have been in a different problem at the table.

I would not kill partner for treating AQ doubleton as primary support.

As for whether 4S makes, the question is a bit academic as no-one is going to bid it ... Unless you are arguing to try to beat a score of 170.

Hi,

Better than 1H is a bid showing the 2-suiter,

2NT comes to mind.

Having bid the way a did, i.e. made the overcall

getting the raise, I would pass.

The sac. against their game maybe great, but they

did not bid game yet.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: The raise by your partner is ok, he has to bid

something and treating AQ as a 3 card suit is not

the worst decision.

Given the way the oppoennets bid, do you believe

they will reach 4S? And even if they reach game,

what I would doubt, it will fail most of the time.

I did not disagree at all with the raise to 2 Hearts - ONLY the comment from my partner that it showed 2 TOP honours.

It was a oneboard single tourney, and partners profile said nothing about 2 suiter - if so - sure I agree better to bid the hand like that.

As much as I despise the convention, it is unclear to me why you chose a 1 heart overcall instead of 2NT showing red suits, assuming that you were going to bid in the first place.

However, given that you are playing matchpoints and are vulnerable, I'm not sure that you might not have been better served by passing initially. Your suits aren't good enough to ensure safety at the 3-level. And, should partner have a good fit for one of your suits, then the opps also have a good fit. The more you can make, the more the opps also are likely to make. And I don't want -200 vs partscore or a big minus vs opp's game.

I dislike your one Heart bid, but okay, you had no two suiter tool avaiable.

I strongly disagree with the 2 bid and the reasoning from pd.

I had bid 3 Heart in vul. because I like to make it difficult for them to reach 3 NT/4 Spade with convidence.

I don't have any problem with 1 heart, 2 hearts, or 2NT on your first turn.

But once you've shown your hand, you've, um, shown your hand. It's not like you have a 15 count, or 6 hearts.

Bridge Hell has a special place for people who have a minimum bid, make it, then bid their hand again.

I think you just found it.
