ralph23 Posted August 15, 2007 Report Share Posted August 15, 2007 3 of ♠ (assuming we play 4th best). ♠ is our best chance to set it, I think, and if I lead a top one, all I do is get a ♠ out of partner's hand. Then I lead another spade, and what if partner is now out of them? Let's lead a low one, give it to declarer, maybe partner will get in with a minor honor, and lead back a ♠ through declarer, giving us 4♠ plus partner's entry. Believe it or don't, setting a game contract is usually a good result in MPs too. Certianly, on the auction 1NT-2♠ (xfer)-3♣-3NT where 3NT is a slam try in clubs or NT, the scoring would matter to me. Here, I just go for the set. This position should not exist. Anyway I would lead a high spade. Either high or low sometimes works, but I do not like a low spade at matchpoints at all. I held Jxx, xxx, Jxx, xxxx and declarer claimed 13 tricks. This did not score well. What interests me about this hand, is at this form of scoring, one must be vigilant to the possibility of needing to take top tricks.
