Freak Hand

Recommended Posts

I was actually playing against the following hand, but I was interested to see how to bid it. We are at MP, neither side is vulnerable. South deals, and has this monster:

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=shakjt853dakt982c]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

My opps went astray and ended up in 5S, (with North having AK in both black suits, as well as a solid 6 card spade suit).

I think the best method would be to bid 1H, and with any response, go to 7D. I think this hand can make slam opposite a few little hearts or diamonds. But how would you bid it?

In a vacuum, opening 1 and rebidding 6 makes sense, as you rate to make 12 tricks opposite any fit, and partner may be able to work out to bid 7 with the right cards (but don't count on it). Rebidding 7 is a bit much, as you need the right cards to make 7 of a red suit.

However, you are not in a vacuum. You have opponents, and if you bid it this way they will probably work out that you are going to make (or that you are not going to make, and double). If you bash to the 6 level, your opps will probably sac with length in a black suit.

With freak hands, you should aim to get the best possible result, not the best result possible. I suggest that you bid these cards slowly. Your opps may be more willing to let you play the hand if they don't know how distributional you really are.

In the LM (or open?) pairs in Philly NABC a few years ago I swear I held

-

AKxxxxx

AKJTxx

-

I went +2330 on that hand, thanks for the memory :)

I very strongly recommend 1 then 2, then cuebidding whatever the opponents overcalled in like crazy. I think 1 then 6 is very bad, though admittedly would be quite common. You are just too likely to have a grand, all you need is any hand with 3+ hearts or 4+ diamonds but partner will never raise you.

1----pass----pass-----X

6----pass----7----pass

making

hows that for a costly reopening X

Opener had something like a 1.5 loser 66 and responder had the ace 5th of and a stiff RHO probably had enough to balance but im not sure.

I don't think 6 gets the job done, thats the call I would make missing one major card:

v, KQJTxxx, AKQxxx, v.

Perhaps 3 followed by 6 expresses the same message, but is stronger by definition, and focuses on the red suit queens / length - instead of something bigger.

By the way, I'd be shocked if this came back to us after we opened with both opponents passing.

Agree with Josh here. With two voids you'll not be passed out at the 1- or 2-level. So go slowly.
