Hi, if you want to preempt, certainly 4 is the right bid. After all if partner has nothing, they make 4. If partner has /Ace, 4 is already on a finesse.

Against this practical bid if they now bid to 4, partner won't know what to do.

So I'd open 1.

Hi,

if you preempt, 4H it is.

You would bid 3H with

xx

KQJxxxx

xxx

x

If you bid 3H with the original hand, you

have partner taken out of the game.

If you bid 4H, you did the same, but slam

chances are remote, so no harm is done.

Should you preempt with the original hand?

No, because you are to strong, but not strong

enough to ensure that you go plus in 3H, i.e

it is better to go slowly.

With kind regards

Marlowe

In third seat, it is normal that pre-empts have a very wide range, particularly when you are non-vulnerable against vulnerable.

Because of that, partner will not raise a third-in-hand 3H opening to game unless he has big heart support. Thus you are really too good to open 3H: you are making game opposite, say, QJx xxx Qxx xxxx.

There are two sensible bids on the hand: either 1H, or 4H. Both are reasonable.

In first or second position, this is a clear 1H opening, as you are too likely to have slam on to want to pre-empt.

Thank you for all the nice and very nice answers...

Sure with this hand on 1/2 seat it's a clear 1 open.

And understand the need to bid 4 if decide to prempt. Like you all said I taken my partner out of this biding with the 3.

It was a interresting hand

1, trying to involve PD, or 4 in 3rd are fine with me.

What I don't understand is those who open 4 and then double 4. This is just a guess that PD has some defensive help to set 4.

Opening 4 and doubling 4 is saying that you've got a great hand for your opening bid (in 3rd seat a 4 opening is really wide-range, both in strenght and distribution) and some defence. Partner is asked to judge his hand and either convert or take out in 5. It's a 2-way shot.

That's most probably how I'd bid this hand in 3rd seat.

If you did open 4 it is 100% clear to double 4, to fail to do so would be a major blunder. The majority of the time you have forced LHO to stretch to make his overcall, so you have to make him pay. All it says is you had a good hand for your 4 opening. If partner happens to have nothing, too bad you got unlucky.

I'd open 1 because I don't like opening 4 then doubling 4 with this particular hand. I fully agree that, if you do open 4, the idea of passing 4 is nausea-inducing, but the idea of rolling the dice with Kx of spades is almost equally nausea-inducing.

So I vote for 1, with 4 a reasonably close 2nd choice and no other call attractive.

I'd far rather open 2N than 3.... and this doesn't look like a 2N opener to me B) BTW, if your reaction is to the 2N suggestion is: 'Wow, what a neat idea!", seek immediate psychiatric help.
