Playing IMP pairs with a competent partner; system SAYC. Opponents' quality moderate or better. Nothing seems amiss at the table; probably everyone has his/her bid. Your bid?

How can everyone have his or her bid? I have 18 points, LHO's 1NT shows a minimum of around 6, and partner's free bid of 2 shows around 6. This leaves 10 points for opener. Even if partner and/or LHO are pushing a little, opener just reversed, which should show more than 10-12 points...

Anyways, I would double this. Penalty, since my initial double showed length in hearts. Typical hand involves extra values and only a so-so fit for clubs (basically the hand I have, although one fewer heart and one more diamond is a possibility). Chances favor responder correcting to diamonds, which partner may (or may not) be able to crack.

Because I thought this was funny...

Maybe:

It is technically possible...

I'd have overcalled 1, but that's a style issue.

Judged from the bidding and my hand, it seems like we play with a near 50 hcp deck (a good 45 at least). So at least one of the other three players is light for his/her action this far.

A double now would be for penalties, since I've already implied heart lenght by the initial t/o double. But I don't think a double now will accomplish much. Surely LHO (or opener) will revert to 3's. And I don't think we're in a good position after that.

Since it seems like there's a couple of distributional hans out there, I'll go quietly for now, and raise partner to 3, planning to follow up with a double over 3's.

I agree with Adam.

Double is for penalties, and I have a penalty double of 2.

So, I bid 3.

Just kidding. I double.

Easiest problem I have seen in some time.

By the way, the initial double was just fine. You have a great hand, you have support for all the unbid suits, and, as if that were not enough, you are strong enough to bid your heart suit after you double first. While it may not be a "classic" double, it is certainly a double. A heart overcall on the first round is just not right on this hand - it emphasizes the hearts too much. If you held

then overcalling 1 with the intention of doubling later would be reasonable. Hearts are the main feature of this hand, but there is support for the other suits and adequate strength to compete later in the auction.
