Double or not?

1N on your right, 2H transfer on your left, X from partner, pass on your right, 2N on your left, 3C on your right, 3N on your left passed around to you. Do you double, and if so how clear is it?

edit: form of scoring is rubber bridge, opps are not a regular partnership and its likely your LHO has no idea what 3C is and bids 3N with all hands.

I don't think it's so auto at all. To me it seems...ok. Even if LHO bids 3NT on all hands, that means some of the time it will have been the right bid. I think players that bad tend to have sounder invitations anyway. It's not like I think there is some suit we will run for down 4 or something.

I double, big upside, non-trivial downside if they send it back :) I think it is clear. Doesn't mean it works.

Agree except I don't think they can ever send it back on this auction right?

I did yesterday on 1NT p 2 (2) 2 p 3 p 4 p p X XX for 1080 :P it's on my myhands page. Of course I shouldn't advertise that since you don't have to scroll up very far too see a -1080 as well lol.

that is a different auction, opener could have 17 and 5 spades even. In our auction one guy had invited and the other guy had REJECTED already (3C).

If I can trust PD to have a good suit and a good hand for his double of the xfer than I'd double as I certainly like my situation and my cards in the pointed suit may prevent the opps from taking a bunch of tricks in them.

However, opposite the typical good pickup PD on BBO, I cannot expect him to have the stuff to set 3NT and my loss if they make it is more than my gain unless I set it two tricks.

Opener's 3 bid is strange, I take him for 2 and 5 although he may be fooling around trying to get us to double with him being max.

Tough call..double if you trust PD.. pass if not. .. neilkaz ..

I would pass.

Since I was silent up to now, bidding know has to be caused by the knowledge of badly placed honors and probably no fit.

Declarer will expect to see the 6 missing 4-2, and if i don't have support, most likely these 4 will be with me. Holding AKQT in his 5-2 split in almost any combination will allow him to make 5 tricks anyway.

Declarer will also suspect, that I hold the Q, because this is the only other card suggested for an upgrade after the bidding.

So he should be able to make 4-5, 2 (they should have 2 stopper), a and 1-2.

After I tip them off with my dbl, I think they are much closer to makeing 9 tricks, than they are, if I keep my mouth shut.

Well, I was definitely going to X (for people who know me I have a propensity to make this kind of X), but my partner thought for a noticable time over 3N before passing (he obviously had the same idea as me lol). I honestly didn't consider passing to be an LA, thats how clear it was, but I was pretty sure if I polled people it would prove that passing was an LA so I did pass. +400 :P

Pass may a logical alternative (it would be a LA to me although I would doube) but dbl is not suggested by p s tanking. You double on opps' bidding, You gotta do what you gotta do. Just my humble opinion.

Of course double is suggested by partner's tank, he was obviously thinking about doubling, which makes your double a lot more attractive. (In real life partner was me, and I had an ace and a king besides my KQJxxx heart suit.)

Well done Justin.

I agree pass is a LA suggested by the UI, so the ethical thing to do is pass 3NT.

I kibbed this.

I know it was a friendly game - and you didn't double because of the tank.

In a real life game (I know its rubber - and you don't have committees for such things) I think you'd win the appeal.

The pass over the double denies 3 spades, so you know they are on a 5-2 fit - and that suit isn't running. 3C was an effort to improve the contract. 3N should be bid only if the 3C call improved his hand, and its evident from yours it didn't. They don't have the values for 3N and they don't have a source of tricks. You have an easy x of 4 anything as well.

I was rather amused by your LHO's comments after this was -4 or -5. 2N is questionable and pass of 3C is 100 %. I think your RHO did everything correctly, and during the argument, I told him 'don't bother' in private.

Helene - what else could the tank have meant? Pard isn't thinking about anything else except a x.

Of course you had, opps' bidding told Justin that you did.

It is still UI that I thought about doubling.

Can't believe it.

Your partner who ought to double doesn't.

You think you can conjure a reason (for a Director) to double on the rubbish you hold. Do you have personal Directors as well as a personal trainer?

who was this addressed to?

Anyone who thinks they can rationalise a double after partner has tanked about doubling in this auction.

How about the fact that before I revealed my results 7 out of 10 respondants (im not including myself, but I am including the guy who said X if you trust pard) chose to double, 70 %. I suspect that if you took a poll of people considered my peers (some respondants were, some werent), that number would be even higher, which is approaching the point where it's not an LA to not take that action.

And I would like to reiterate that I did pass.
