What do you bid? Pass? 3? Other?

I think I am too timid on certain types of hands, and have played some partscores making 4-6 recently. Or worse, I have to apologize to pard for dropping them in a part score, when game was on.

well if you respond like I do with one ace, rebidding 3 Diamonds may get you too high, especially if I had a 2 heart rebid over your minor response to my 1NT (semi forcing bid)

hand two is exactly what I am on about, the 2 heart bid, I believe is 100% forcing you to pass as you only bid 2 diamonds in the first place, you have already decided you are not strong enough to jump to 3 diamonds to show extra strength

at the table I bid 3 diamonds

Solve this recurring problem with partner by adopting something to handle this hand.

The solution I have with several partners is for 1-P-1NT-P-2NT to be an artificial marionette to 3 and GF. Jump shifts instead show 5-5 pattern and about a 5-loser hand. This is a better hand by LTC, if a fit exists, but I'd rather show this much than show a mere 2 rebid, planning to pass 2.

wow, really surprised by all the 2D rebidders. I am quite sound in my JSs but it seems like we have to bid 3D with a hand this good.

We have 17 hcp only, and one of them is wasted, Justin! :) Seriously, I think people don't upgrade enough for having top honors in their long suits.

IIRC, LTC for 5-5 shapes is one greater than the ovious losers, because repeated taps will usually run you out of trump before you can set up the other long suit.

If you truly expected to make game opposite a couple of kings, then you should jump-shift to 3. I don't think this hand qualifies, but playing 2/1 (with forcing NT) I would feel forced to do so because the 2D rebid already has too wide a range - from a 5=3=3=2 with 12 HCP to a 5=1=4=3 with 17.

Playing a system where the 2 rebid shows 4+ diamonds, I might choose that rebid, but I would need to do something constructive over 2. The raise to 3 looks like the best of bad choices.

IMHO, the problem on this sort of hand is not so much the wide range for a 2D rebid, as it is the wide range for responder's 2H rebid. If the latter actually showed a terrible hand with long hearts, 1S-1NT; 2D-2H; P would be easy enough. The trouble is that responder might have that terrible hand, but he might also have something much better than that, since (in 2/1) virtually all hands with long hearts and less than a game force must respond 1NT. Weak jump-shifts help some, but not enough.
