bigger flaw?

Matt:

Thou Shalt Not Lie - it's a sin.

I would double, not bid 1NT to show the hcps. If partner bids diamonds, I can live with it. The hand has 4-4 in the majors and prime cards that are well placed. IMO, a 1NT overcall rates to make it harder to find a 4-4 major fit as well as implying at least one club stopper.

prefer double by some distance both because of the added likelihood of a major suit contract when I hold both 4M (and at the relevant level it is going to be right more often than NT) and because after I double if they pre-empt in C, my partner will only introduce D with at least 5 (otherwise responsive double in my preferred style) - so I am protected to some degree.

Also, the lack of a stopper when combined with bottom of range (albeit good intermediates) militates against NT.

Actually, pass gets no consideration on these cards.

But I would not be so quick to dismiss 1NT.

In real life, I would double, but I would be prepared to apologize when we arrive in 3D on a 4-2 fit.

Double is absolutely fine, the risk if any is negligible. Any other choice is seriously flawed.

I do not consider it possible for us to get to a 4-2 diamond fit on the 3 level, nor would I apologize for making a completely normal bid.

matmat: it is usually better to lie about stoppers than shape. Thus dbl is probably better than anything else.

Huh?

Double lies about your shape. 1N lies about your stopper.

So why do you say "it is usually better to lie about stoppers than shape." and then recommend double?

Dbl doesn't lie about the shape. In fact, it is more descriptive about it than 1NT, which is why it is my preferred bid.

Sure it does -- a takeout double shows at least 3-card support for all the unbid suits, not just the majors.

It may be a small lie, but it is a lie none-the-less.

Great hand for a power double (sorry - shameless plug ;))

Playing standard methods, i suppose I'd overcall 1N but I don't like it one little bit. The slow diamond suit means we'll need 2nd spade stop to make 3N, and 1N is so wrong positionally.

2D may or may not get us to 3N from pard's side, and I would be very understanding if my pard made this well thought out call :P

A takeout double accomplishes nothing.
