Lead ♠7, declarer puts up the king after a normal trick one-thought.

ArtK78
I cannot imagine that it could be wrong to win trick one and play a diamond.
cherdano
Can it be wrong to duck? Can it help?
ArcLight
Pard didnt lead ♦. I wonder if he has a holding like AQ....Since declarer has 17-19, pard must have a few HCP outside of ♦.Lest assume they are the ♣ Q J. If you take the ace, and give pard his 2 ♦ tricks, and declarer plays you for 4 hearts while holding AQx in hand he can make, by discarding 2 ♣ on the QJ o f♠ (he holds Q J x x as indicated from the NT bid). The ♠ king is needed as an entry to finesse hearts. If you duck, the spade K can't be used as an entry to finesse ♥And if trumps aren't pulled you can play a third round of ♠ killing a discard. I don't see how the 2♦ can be discarded. So it seems that ducking is safe. Of course at the table I win the ace and lead back a ♦.
bid_em_up
Pard didnt lead ♦. I wonder if he has a holding like AQ.... If you take the ace, and give pard his 2 ♦ tricks, and declarer plays you for 4 hearts while holding AQx in hand he can make, If this is the case, surely partner will continue with a 3rd diamond preventing declarer from bringing in the trump suit.... pclayton
I know the hand. By the way, this was one of the Clash sequences we has against Hamway. Brian overcalled 3♦ showing diamonds or hearts and they played the inferior 3N.

Free
♠A, ♦T, wtp? P didn't bid 2♣, so he must have good ♦s.
cherdano
[hv=n=skxhkt987djxct9xx&w=s72hxda98xxxckqxx&e=sat8xxhjxxxdtxcxx&s=sqj9xhaqxdkqxcajx]399|300|[/hv]Of course ♠A and diamond seems normal, but (barring an inspired heart guess by declarer) I don't think it is ever necessary - and on the actual hand, the hand is over if you do that, whereas declarer might give partner a chance to signal for clubs if he starts pulling trumps after your duck. (I was declarer and hadn't decided yet what to do at trick 2, but a spade continuation would look silly if trumps are 3-2 and RHO continues with a third spade.) keylime
I voted for ducking, because I'm not sure a diamond return is what is going to get this defense started and they have a foul split in trumps potentially coming. If anything, I'm inclined to win and switch to a club before winning and playing a diamond through due to my trump holding, but I might change my mind.
