BOSTON - In a stinging rebuke of the FBI, a federal judge on Thursday ordered the government to pay a record judgment of nearly $102 million because agents withheld evidence that would have kept four men from spending decades in prison for a mob murder they did not commit.

Gertner said Boston FBI agents knew mob hitman Joseph "The Animal" Barboza lied when he named Joseph Salvati, Peter Limone, Henry Tameleo and Louis Greco as Deegan‘s killers. She said the FBI considered the four "collateral damage" in its war against the Mafia, the bureau‘s top priority in the 1960s.

"The FBI‘s misconduct was clearly the sole cause of this conviction," the judge said.

And how much "collateral damage" will occur with the following?

The FBI is taking cues from the CIA to recruit thousands of covert informants in the United States as part of a sprawling effort to boost its intelligence capabilities.

According to a recent unclassified report to Congress, the FBI expects its informants to provide secrets about possible terrorists and foreign spies, although some may also be expected to aid with criminal investigations, in the tradition of law enforcement confidential informants. The FBI did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

The FBI said the push was driven by a 2004 directive from President Bush ordering the bureau to improve its counterterrorism efforts by boosting its human intelligence capabilities.

The aggressive push for more secret informants appears to be part of a new effort to grow its intelligence and counterterrorism efforts. Other recent proposals include expanding its collection and analysis of data on U.S. persons, retaining years' worth of Americans' phone records and even increasing so-called "black bag" secret entry operations

Hey, if you can't trust the FBI, who can you trust.

Hmmm...Now who does one trust.....FBI cant be - Even the honorable BBC cant be after all the brouhaha of how they run their game shows on TV and their own producers win the quiz and all the money. We all know we cant trust our bridge partner - They are the most untrusty beasts! The Spouse cant be trusted thats a known fact! I wouldnt trust my teenage son to come within a mile of my computer or wallet! Trusting ones boss is foolishness beyod compare! And dont ask one of us to trust our work colleagues - after all if they dont stab you in the back they think its a character flaw! Who does one trust? Good question!!!!

Only one comment.

That seems to be an apt parallel.

In the posted quotes, it is still hard for me to grasp the comment about "collateral damage". It is irrelevant whether or not these people were deserving of some punishement - the relevant issue is how a supposed agency of law enforcement can rue the rule of law in order to gain convictions.

But then, having Gonzales and the Justice Department refuse to bring contempt charges due to Bush's claims of executive privalege shows where the rule of law ranks in today's world when compared to loyalty and obfuscation.

So we were singing Bye, bye, Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry....
