Another hand from Nashville

I missed Nashville, but I got lots of questions when my friend got back. Here's another one that I found interesting:

K K108xx AKJx KJx

Dealer opens 1 to your right. Your move...

I would overcall 1NT and I would not even consider it sick.

Suppose one of your small hearts was a small spade. What would you call?

I am pretending that I am 2-4-4-3.

At the actual two tables in the team event, one team passed this hand and defended 3, setting it one trick.

At the other table, this hand doubled, and they played 3NT making.

I personally would have overcalled 1NT and then quickly ran out the door if this was a disaster, to get away from a justifiably upset partner. Given time to cool down, I think he'd be more sympathetic.

Well, let's see the whole deal.

Ken, why would your partner be so upset that you would have to run out the door?

As I mentioned, 1NT is, at most, one spot card off. I have seen partners make worse calls, and I don't get so upset that they have to run out of the room.

1NT is a reasonable call on this hand, and I would bid it without reservation.

On the other hand, double is a terrible call.

Dummy ended up having:

Qx Qxx Qxxx Axxx

I don't know the specifics of the two remaining hands, except that clubs split 4-2, Qx in Opener's hand, and that spades split 8-2, with Ax in Opener's hand. I suppose that this kind of forces the following likely full layout:

[hv=d=e&n=sqxhqxxdqxxxcaxxx&w=sjxxxxxxxhdxc10xxx&e=saxhaj9xxdxxxxcqx&s=skhk108xxdakjxckjx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

Obviously, a freak. Good practice should not be governed by the results on freak hands. But, interesting.

Thank you for the interesting problem Ken.

IMO P = 10, 1N = 9, X = 6.

But passing may result in a missed game as here.

Because delayed action may be more fraught than immediate action

Also a 1N overcall makes it harder for opps to find a spade fit :)

Whether you want to prevent that is a moot point :(

Q2. What do you do after

(1) _P (1) _P

(1N) ??

Q3. Assuming that you pass 1N, what do you do after

(1) _P (1) _P;

(1N) _P (2) _P;

(_P) ??
