If you'd give us the complete hand we may be able to judge if his opening was right or not. K-Kxxxxx-xxxx-QJ is an awful holding, while x-Kxxxxx-AQxx-xx is a way better 9 pointer...

So I can't judge at the moment.

My partner opened 1 H with 6 H With K and 4 D. He only had 9 Hcp. I responded 2D with 3 card support, 4d and 13 Hcp. He then rebid 2 H. the final contract was 4 H which me made.

Was his opening bid correct?

Hi,

at first glance, I would say no, but it depends

on the system you are playing and partnership

agreement.

Assuming a pickup partner, this would would

more or less imply standard american, and I

would say, that the hand is to weak for a system,

where a 2/1 bid promises another bid, assuming

you and your partner know, that a 2/1 bid promises

another bid, but it is a guess.

With kind regards

Marlowe

"Was his bid correct?"

That depends upon style and partnership agreements. What I can say is that I personally approve of and use a style where a 9-count 6/4 hand can be opened with a concentration of good values in the two suits.

I would not hesitate, personally, to open xx AQxxxx Kxxx x. I'd prefer a ten ot two, or some nice 8's and 9's, but I admittedly would not care that much. I also would want the Ace or King in the diamond suit; otherwise 2 might look more appealing.

Was this a correct opening bid?

NO.

Much too light. I play light opening bids nonvul and this is still not a 1 bid.

I don't even understand why posters are saying "It depends upon this or that..."

If you play that an opening 1 bid in a major promises 6-10 HCP, then it is a fine opening bid. But I suspect that is not the case.

I suspect that 4H was a lucky make.

In Nashville, third seat, I thought a 6-count was a (real, non-psychic) 1S opener. We play light, but not insanely light (decent 11) openers. The opponents didn't even blink.

Of course, the hand was AJTxx T987xx Jx --.

I've seen 9-counts that are much better than my average minimum opener - I open them. Having said that, a 9-count with a stiff K is a 6+count, and had better be a bomb.

Michael.
