Would you balance?

Recommended Posts

object strongly to not overcalling 1H.

I have made some really bad objections in my day, but this one takes the cake!

You object to a pass with that crap at IMP's?

IMO, the order of sanity:

1. Pass

2. 2

3. Psychic double

4. Psychic 1NT

5. Psychic 2 Michaels

6. Blackwood 4NT

7. Gerber

and, roll the drums,

8. 1

I agree wholeheartedly but would like to switch 7. and 8. :)

Not my style to overcall 1H with this, but it seems to be more popular recently. 2N might be better.

A chance to pass out 1N with 5 HCP? I think more likely opps missed something than we are missing something, but balance to protect partner is OK. So 2H is fine. Or 2N. My partnership does not play a DONT-like 2D in this position. Does anyone?

Basically agree with Ken but if I'd have to psyche, I would choose 1 or 1N. A direct 2 is ok with me, at least if discussed with p. Btw, why didn't you put 2N on your list? Not that I would bid it.

Now I bid 2. No, we don't play DONT for a number of reasons, one of them being that we need dbl for something else than a 1-suiter.

For those bidding 1:

I assume that you would show great discipline and pass as advancer after 1-1-3 with something like Axx KQx Axxx Axx? Sure, 3 might go down, if hearts are 3-2. And, sure, 3 would be a good sacrifice when 3 does make, even doubled ties the thing, losing two spades and three diamonds when diamonds or hearts are 4-1, and 3 might even make!

This hand is different than balancing in a 1N p p situation, because in this case opener is behind your partner who has the presumed strength of the partnership.

After 1N p p, this hand is almost a required balance, but after 1C p 1N p p, it is a lot more risky.

I will balance with a double.

If you overcall 1, then what can pard expect of your overcalls? How will pard distinguish between a 5 HCP hand and a 15 HCP hand? Might pard not make a penalty double, expecting you to have more?

Or is the modern trend that a one level overcall is purely lead directional?

I have to admit that I pass both times. It is not my style to make a non jump O/C with only 5 hcp even if they are all in my 5 card suit. Call me old-fashioned :) .

As for reopening the 2nd time, PD could have made a take out dbl of 1 after the opp 1NT but didn't. I'll pass, just incase 2Hx is getting killed.

I kibitzed a hand played by Fantoni on Spingold.

He overcalled 1 after 1 opening by RHO with following one:

[hv=d=e&v=b&s=sj9xha109xxxdxcxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

At least he has 6 and very serious and well practiced agreements with PD (I presume). I'd overcall a weak 2 but perhaps that means something else in their partnership, or perhaps he fears he may preempt PD out of , although I suspect that if PD has enough to try for a game he can bid them over a weak 2. Also maybe he fears 2x getting killed even though it is red vs red.

The wonderful thing about this game is that there are different strokes for different folks and at least here, if advancer gets a bit excited you have more offence with that 6th trump.

I totally agree with the objection to not overcalling 1H. In the words of my Australian partner, "If my partner saw me pass this hand, she would introduce me to that famous Russian Bridge player Illa Kutschyanutzorv. By the way, his pd was former World Champ Nicola Smith nee Gardiner. She would ALWAYS overcall on hands like this.

I would certainly NOT balance. Balancing is far more dangerous than overcalling.
